It's technically a foot from each end of the bed rail but I've moved mine around to accommodate brackets and objects in the bed that I don't want to make contact with the topper clamp and I've yet to have an issue. You can see in the 2nd picture I posted that I have them currently positioned almost at the end of the bed rail because I was tweaking the fitment and liked how the top looked when the bracket was further back.

After 6 years I find myself rolling up the back window a lot. It gets dusty back there any way you slice it. Just be sure to remove the crossbar and store it somewhere if you do. The straps aren't tight enough to keep it from falling out.

I used to just close my tailgate over the flap for a clean look. Never had an issue, year round in all weather. Little to no leaks from the tailgate.

I noticed some minor scratching on my tailgate from the velcro collecting dust and rubbing. I didn't attach velcro to the tailgate and haven't really had issues with it flapping. I have started to close it in the tailgate like this until I can buff out the scratches and apply some clear 3M protectant on the tailgate.

Nah! Just get some 3/4 rubber grommets and wiggle them on each end of the bar... Like so:

After having both a bestop super topper, and softtopper, I will say I like the softtopper better. My few little gripes with the softtopper, would be how long the back flap is, the frame joint in the middle hangs below the bed rails, so now I have to find a different way to mount my jack.
Bestop, I didn't like how the side windows come out, and not having a canvas option really got frustrating during winter in North Dakota, where it gets cold enough that the plastic shatters when you just look at them. Also, the Velcro strip up front was ok, but I had to clamp the Velcro down or it would lift over time

Definitely affected my MPG, but only by a marginal amount, maybe 1-2 MPG less

Canopy Toppers in general give worse mileage. I could be wrong, but my understand of why is that they create a larger vacuum of air behind the truck. Tonneau covers are known for helping with fuel consumption, but not a softopper. Unless you have an aerodynamic top that can disrupt the air flow vacuum, you're going to see worse mileage. Some people see no difference, but the physics speak for themselves on this one.

Anyone have pics of a gray Softopper on MGM Taco? I'm looking at the Softopper and the new Bestop Supertop 2. Supertop only comes in black, which I don't mind, but I'm wondering how the gray Softopper would look. Looks very light compared to an MGM though.
