I'm an electronic idiot, so if you don't install the switch there are no ill side affects? So why do people install the switch?

I have yet to encounter any ill effect of having the wire open. The switch is an insurance policy just in case.

Short of pulling the head unit, is wire 17 accessible anywhere else that’s easier to get to?

saw on you tube the head unit is super easy to pull. Remove the nav surround panel just by carefully pulling it off, head unit is held on by 4 bolts, and its easy to get to the 28 pin connector to cut that wire 17. Thanks all!

this literally took me longer to find the 10mm socket and ratchet and extensions and heat shrink and side cuts, and put those tools away, than it did to do the mod. Thanks all, nav works now while driving and has zero issues upon startup or anytime after the mod.

So did just cutting wire 17 work? Navigation works fine but no lock when driving?

Cutting wire 17 didn't work on my 2019. Technically it did, you could access what was normally grayed out. But my truck stayed in my garage the whole time i was driving. Reconnected the wire.

Speaking of voice rec, what is the shortcut for, say, getting the route to a specific city? "Get directions to Des Moines, IA"?

I know I could read the manual but I'm lazy. These systems are all a little different and a little wonky.

Heh. The system sucks. Same Nav in my daughter's Lexus. But since it came with the truck I thought why not give it a try. Sucks that the passenger can't type an address in while driving. I've seen it covered in a couple other threads and have also seen the "use your voice feature" or "preprogram your route" comments which I will probably end up doing if I'm not using Waze or Google.

Sometimes it takes days but eventually it goes back to normal. Mine did the same at first but then it started working

Instead of cutting, can you just de-pin the wire? That way it is reversible. But I have just been using voice recog and haven't had an issue yet. It is a little slow though.

That’s my recollection from the anytime backup camera mod... flipping the switch allowed input, but killed updates. That’s what the switch was for.
