Yes, we do need more stringent emission controls on diesels. We also need competent mechanics who understand systems that are more complex than your basic mechanical injection units. Diesel soot is the main contributor to the poor air quality in the Central Valley.

I would like my daughter to have a fighting chance at breathing clean air.

Not enough to have a build thread.
Being one of those mechanics you mentioned, its also imperative that owner/operators have their vehicles routinely inspected and repair anything deemed unsafe. I cant tell you how many times fuel and oil leaks that were dripping onto the exhaust were declined.

I can understand why and the need for this. But the people that are forcing this law to change it, need to have a better understanding of what can really work on these system instead of just throwing shit together.
I've seen this emission systems blow out other components on the working system, that isn't cheap to replace.
Some of these systems I've seen, dont even know how to even work with these motors and then sit in a shop with mechanics looking at saying,WTF, IDK.

Dont get me wrong, prefer to have a excellent emission system just to breath cleaner air , but not at cost of the rest of the truck breaking.

I was going to include owner responsibility, but I thought that would ruffle too many feathers and be construed as political in nature... Even though it’s not.

Lol, just pointing out another viewpoint. Most the younger guys i worked with understood the systems pretty well. The older guys tended to treat symptoms with a blanket of parts that they know would fix the issue. All things considered, mistakes do still happen and a thorough road test should prevent anything catastrophic (see above) thats the fault of a mechanic from leaving the shop in any condition other than properly operating.

But in the flat rate mentality of most shops, they only care if you road test when something goes wrong. The more corners you cut, the faster the work gets done, the more money everyone makes. The heroes of the shop tend to be the biggest hacks. Or at least this has been my experience.

    Agreed.

I am personal friends with a few “wonks” that only speak in theoreticals. I remind them that there is a difference between theoretical and applied. These people work for the California Air Resource Board. They have really impressive modeling systems and programs. But the disconnect between those labs and the techs in the service bays is far and wide...

how much did it cost to go from stock HU to what you rock? I'm intrigued but can never seem to justify the cost.

Tiffany's (2013) was the most recent, and in addition to the $400 HU, I spent another $200 on modules and whatnot, but it's fully integrated into the OBD2 system for tpms, gauges, and other goodies.
