2020 Tacoma, improved auto transmission?

One-size-fits-all is always a fail. It will probably be the worst Tacoma yet. A truck built on compromise.

 

A simple fix would be a better motor

 

the 1st gen tundras were just larger 1st gen tacos. just because theyre the same architecture doesnt mean its all the same parts. they'll make it work out.

If you’ve got the small 1st gen V8 Tundra, you already own the ultimate Tacoma, if you get what I mean.

He also said the change was incorporated in the 2019 trucks so, you could test drive a 2019 to see if it has been improved to your liking. I had a 2016 with all tsb’s applied. I was ok with the transmission shifting on that truck. My 2019 has improved shifting over my 2016. It’s still not perfect but, close enough.

 

Don’t notice any of the points you mention with my 2019 TRD sport. It hold gears long enough while accelerating and the cruise works perfectly in the hills and flats. It’s much improved over my 2016 with all tsb’s applied.

 

I took it the same way. No REAL major change, just a tweak that won't likely please most owners.

I've pretty much come to accept that OVTune is the way to go. I just haven't pulled the trigger yet... Plus I want those twin turbos!

 

I think my 2018 Tacoma is fine and it never gear hunts anymore. I think it's a combination of tsbs and driving style.

The Tacoma doesn't like it's pedal being mashed down- quickly or pedal to the metal. Smooth throttle control alleviates the gear hunting almost entirely. I can still make it gear hunt if I drive aggressively.

 

According to my indy shop, Toyoda 4WD in Kamloops B.C., Toyota has "fixed" the AT for 2019. I still bought a MT.

 

I have few complaints with my 2019. It goes to the next highest gear at relatively low RPM and can feel a bit boggy when it does so. Also downshifts on relatively mild hills, but not unexpected IMO. Lot of truck to push with a V6.

Overall I love the engine note and feel of my Tacoma. Better than the tinny Ranger I test drove.

I think the TNGA Tacoma and tundra are probably going to shatter expectations.

 

I think you should either apply for a Toyota sales position, or maybe go work for Kool Aid.

 

They need to put in a proper engine in the Tacoma. Yes the gear hunting could be due to programing of the transmission but that's not the full story IMO. The engine is a effect of it also. The 3.5 V6 does not have much torque down low thus why the constant downshifting, it makes power at higher RPM. What the Tacoma needs is a proper engine with low end torque. Programing wont solve hunting for gears, engine needs more torque.

OP, photogr4x4: Check out the sprint booster. I don’t even notice weird shifting anymore since I installed mine. Might not be your cup of tea, but I’m definitely happy
