2019 tacoma SR engine question

The pre 12 sec mark noise is the injectors. Perfectly normal. Post 12 sec mark noise is not normal. Actually sounds like a rod knock to me. I would strongly suggest taking your truck to a competent mechanic ASAP.

Edit- I should add that I'm not saying it IS a rod knock but based on your video it is the first thought that comes to mind. Once again, competent mechanic time. The post 12 sec noise is not normal.

 

2.7 injectors don’t clean themselves. That’s a V6 issue.

Your noise is NOT i repeat NOT normal.

Congrats...you got the worlds first defective 2TR. Get it fixed...while it’s in warranty

 

well...toke to 2 different dealers and they sayed its the vacuum pump turning on.....

 

Go pick a truck like yours off the lot and ask them to start it up for you. If the truck doesn’t make the same noises then tell them it’s not normal.

 

While the engine is running and the noise starts up does the noise ever stop. The air injection pump (vacuum pump) is on the right side of the engine compartment. Looks like a hair dryer. Put your had on it and you can tell when it's running.

 

The engine starts and there's no knocking noise two-three minutes into the engine warming up it comes on! If it turns on and off while normal driving I can't tell.

 

Does it have oil? Did you check the dipstick? No offense, just figured Id ask the simplest question haha

 

Whenever I start the truck regardless if it's cold or warm. knocking sound is not on. 2-3 minutes into the truck running it starts to knock. almost like something is turning on. now if I turn off the truck and restart it. the knocking goes away and two or three minutes later it turns back on... if it actually turns off sometime during driving I can't tell.
yea...its got oil.

 

Just let it idle for a while and see it the knocking stops. The vacuum pump doesn't run all the time. Also bring the rpm up to 2,000, is the knock still there? Does the knock get quicker as the engine speeds up?

 

when parked/idle....after knock comes on! not 100% sure if it speeds up/ maybe...hard to tell due to engine noise.

 

If it speeds up then the noise is internal and has nothing to do with the air injection system. Does the noise ever go away when the engine is warm?

 

let me retract....what i said. its hard to tell if it speeds up due to engine noise. i believe it does but not 100% since engine noise drowns out knocking when i accelerate...but to add to this converstation...just went out and started truck cold! and this time knocking didnt start till like 10min into engine on... definitely sounds like something turning on? not sure what? no check engine lights at all!
as far as it turning on/off havent noticed knocking turning off....once it starts...but definitely not on when i start engine.....btw....the reason you can hear it loud...is becuase i video taped it under the truck....from side of tire well you can hear it but not that loud...
only reason i heard it was becuase when i parked when i got home or to work early morn...its very quiet area....and i noticed it....

 

What I'm trying to determain is if its engine related. Accelerate the motor just above idle, say 1,000rpm. Does the noise quicken? You should be able to hear it at 1,000 rpm. Have someone work the accelerator while you listen up front.

 

I understand that's what I did.... later on at lunch time I'm going to get under the truck I have my buddy accelerate to see if I can hear it closer

Never heard that sound before either. Mine is an SR5, but I assume that shouldn’t make that much of a difference.

 

not sure if they changed anything from 2016 til 2019....

 

If the noise increases with engine speed the noise is likely motor related and would have to be diagnosed further. If the noise stays constant then is another component. As mentioned here before, go back to the dealer and ask then to reproduce the noise on another new 2 .7 truck.

 

My 2018 doesn't make that knocking noise, just the normal sewing machine ticks heard before the knocking in your video starts.

 

By the way I'm a Toyota tech that's off work because I had carpal tunnel surgery so I have time to answer some questions. The 2.7l is a bullet proof motor and yours would be the first I've seen that had an engine related problem.
