Lots of threads on this, so I just decided to start a new one as I didn't know where to put it. Many of you have been hesitant to give your babies up to your dealer to get this gas pedal recall work done. Your fears are unwarranted and irrational. I am only 5'9" and was considering telling them to not shorten the pedal. They convinced me to have it done. I CAN TELL NO DIFFERENCE. I even tried to slide my foot back and use the tip of my shoe...no problem. They re-flashed the computer for the acceleration/brake udpate, AND THE FLASH UDPATED ANYTHING ELSE THAT NEEDED TO BE ADJUSTED. The truck runs fine. I can discern NO DIFFERENCE in drivability, etc.

There is absolutely no reason to fear this recall.

Thanks for the input. I'm still "on the fence" on this one.

I agree. No difference for me either. Not that big of a deal although I did take out my rubber floor mats so they didn't take 'em.

I was a little disappointed. I don't know that the pedal needed to be cut down.
I do know that the "new" floor mats are not at all the same. If you have tub style floor mats and you want the recall done, take them out or you will lose them. The new mats absolutely suck and will not contain the water your old all-weather mats would have.

I did like that the carpet was cleaned--would have been nice to do the whole truck though.

Good for you, but to me it's a principle issue.

First, I'm 100000000% certain this is a CYA tactic and isn't the root cause of the unintended acceleration issues.

Second, they performed the recall on my truck without asking/informing me whatsoever. They essentially "stole" from me and basically told me too bad when I complained.

Can I feel a difference in the pedal...? Your damn right I can.

Does your truck handle any differently now? If you would buy a brand new 2011 tacoma, would you notice a difference? (their pedals are already shorted in the mold.) If its that big of an issue, you can call toyota, tell them you are unsatisfied with it, and they will send you a new pedal at no charge and have your local toyota dealer install it, again, at no charge.

I have weathertech floor mats. They didn't touch them. The ECU flash updates the engine and tranny computer. Free. Why the hell not.

In fact, I think the shortened pedal is a vast improvement. Now, with the cruise control on, I can stretch my right leg out without hitting the gas pedal! This may be a CYA recall, but it doesn't hurt anything, it's free, and I got a refreshed/rebooted engine CPU. In my opinion , the ONLY worry or concern anyone should have is what they do to your floor mat or carpet. As I have weathertechs, it was a non-issue. They didn't even remove it when they worked on the pedal.

I had the recall done this past weekend and pleaded with the service guy to only do the reflash and not cut the pedal as I have the weathertechs anyways. He said that since I wasn't being a dick he would let me in on a "secret". To tell him that the pedal was unacceptable and they would order a new one cut from the factory and install it for free. Of course I already knew that thanks to this site :D. When they finished the recall I looked at the pedal and there was not a significant difference and the edges appeared to be sanded/smoothed out. I have not been able to notice any difference at all when driving. I agree with the OP. Not a big deal.

Town & Country Toyota on South Blvd in Charlotte. I bought my truck there. I walked in, told them exactly what I wanted and the price I was willing to pay. They said fine, wrote it up, I drove out an hour later. VERY nice customer service lounge area with TV, free Wi-Fi, private W-Fi/telephone rooms, coffee. Very courteous staff. Easy dealership to work with.

Oh ok. I bought mine out of state because none of the guys in Charlotte could match the prices. I got the service done at Toyota of Concord because it's closer but I didn't have a bad experience with T & C. They just couldn't get the truck/price. I will say that the guy at Scott Clark's was a dick though.

I too have been following these threads about the gas pedal recall in anticipation of what I'd do if/when I receive my recall notice. If this truly is a CYA by Toyota, and you ignore their recall... could you be letting them off the hook? Say if something crazy were to happen couldn't they say that it wouldn't have happened if you had done the pedal recall & flash? Whereas if you go ahead and do the recall then you've done everything they requested and they don't have an out.

Scott Clark's salesmen are thieves....I have had a VERY bad experience with them and will NEVER EVER go there again. They treat customers like dirt.

I got the notice, but haven't had it done.
I have Husky mats in my truck and have at least 2 inches between the bottom of the pedal and my plastic non clumping mats.
Question: why on earth would MY pedal need to be butchered by a cross eyed Toyota tech?
I say this because a few pics on this site that I have seen look horrible.
Toyota should NOT be chopping pedals in my opinion, not only is it unnecessary but they should REPLACE the pedal and not chop it to save their ass.

You know, I always have a hard time simply ignoring a car company's decision to update or make a change to a vehicle. I know people that have worked at Ford, Chevrolet, etc. These companies employ some of the best automotive engineers in the business. Ignore them at your own risk. As FDR said, "The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself". And my favorite is this one:

"Irrational fear is worse than blind happiness" (by ME)
