What have you learned from your Scanguage?

I just installed my new ScanguageII last week and have been tinkering with various things. What have other users discovered about their truck? I'm still trying to figure out my best mileage for both 5th and 6th gear on the highway. What do you tend to monitor?

Just looking for various ways that other users take advantage of what the scanguageII can do.

 

I monitor mpg, load, mph (cuz i have bigger tires) and water temp. I have learned that I waste a lot of gas.

 

I have MPG, Avg MPG, and the other two I cycle through depending on what I care about at the time. Right now it's on MPH and intake air temp. Sometimes I monitor coolant temp, sometimes I monitor load.

 

on my manual, I have learned that you can go very low in RPM (down to 1300-1400 in fifth gear, even less in traffic) to achieve best MPG. Everytime there is no load I go up to the highest gear possible which is 95% of the time fifth gear.

I learned that wind, face or side, have a HUGE effect on fuel economy, mostly when it's cold outside.

Temperature has a big impact also, where 100 KPH would lead to a approx 9.5-10 LHK in summer, and 10.8-11.5 during winter (sometimes even more).

warm up of the engine has a big impact on your overall MPG over a short or medium lenght destination.

And speed vs MPG...

 

That we still can't get Trans Temps even with XGauge commands.

 

Mine basically confirms that gas mileage is mostly about the common sense stuff (if its warmed up, what the weather's like). But I've found it useful for picking out the sweet spots for shifting (around town) and for maintaining an efficient cruising speed on the interstate.

Really? I usually try to keep it between 2000-2500 rpm on the highway. Going to have to mess with that.

 

What I really meant is when you are driving on a suburban road, for example, use higher gear as much as possible.

 

How did you learn about the above problems? Was it a pressure issue and you felt like your truck was underperforming or what? What kind of diesel do you drive? Do you think the scangauge is a good investment or just a nice to have toy?

 

I agree 100% with the above post. Low rpm is key. I also learned that a lot of people are either lying or exagerating their mileage. I also found out the highway mileage is so poor, that low speed city driving gets better mileage! (20 mpg easily achievable in the city) Since getting my scangauge I have had 1 tank that averaged over 17 mpg, and my wife drives the truck most, and we drive 90% highway. I roll my eyes when people claim 20 mpg highway, because on average, that is impossible unless you travel at 55 mph (V6), I have also noticed the water temp never spikes, and is always below 92C. Another observation is how fast I accelerate affects mileage less than my braking habits.

 

IAT (intake air temps), MPG, AFR, and engine load...most of the time I have coolant/water temps instead of engine load...
