So the person who caused all the drama because they were microwaving fish in the mornings...just lost their right to work here anymore because they got caught trying to install a VPN on their government-issued laptop. Instant failure of the rules-of-behavior, one-way ticket out the door. Security was waiting for them at 0615 when I rolled in.

Apparently, their reaction was they thought it was okay because they only used it when they weren't at work. IT'S NOT YOUR LAPTOP, MORON!!

Don't know - CSOC ain't saying, only that alarm bells went off yesterday when it connected back up to the network. I'm thinking FireEye detected suspicious traffic and that is what set it off, because the tools that report configuration changes only give periodic updates.

I only found out about that because I'm still on the security distro list (people really need to do some digital housekeeping, not that I'm complaining) and I caught wind of it. Was a surprise to be right behind the guy coming in this morning when security snags him at the metal detector.

Wouldn't surprise me if they made a federal investigation out of it. There's no reason to put a private VPN on a government computer other than you're doing sneaky shit. Personal laptops are cheap - government-furnished equipment is not for playtime. Don't be lazy. Contractors also usually get a company computer for doing their own internal company work, so he can't use that as an excuse.

That's the problem with allowing developers to install software on their own laptops. No active control over what's installed. Still, it was apparently installed Tuesday, so not a bad reaction time.

We just implemented a policy thats similar. Everything is now vetted by security and it before it's put in an approved list.

Only makes sense with all the state sponsored hacking in the world.

Whitelist or nothing. The problem with that is that the whitelist is compared when the tool scans, not at install. They're trying to keep the footprint down because we're only using 250 and 500 GB SSDs, and between the O/S and gold disk loads our systems are pretty "functional" at issue. Still, morons get unlimited network storage and STILL would rather save to their desktops.

    I'm surrounded by moron-level geniuses.
