I just bought my first tacoma 2 months ago, its a 2.7 manual prerunner sr5.. nothing special. i did just buy a 3" lift that is on its way to me in the mail. i was told that 285 can fit but might run when turned hard. anyone have a 3" lift and 285's? will it work?
also... should i get a chip or regear?
    thanks

I run a 3" lift plus 1" body lift. I only did the BL, so I didn't have to worry about beating the pinch weld. I also have 285/75/16's and they do rub full lock, just do turn that sharp! haha. But you have a late model taco, so the rubbing should be minimal or not at all.

On the chip/re-gear q. There's no chip that can help I promise. Now re-gearing is a better solution. What gears do you have now?

You might have some rubbing on the cab mount and/or on the plastic around your fender wells. Just take your time when trimming and you'll be fine.

"Chips" like the ones from ebay don't do much. If you want better performance- Take a look around URDUSA.com for some ideas. And I wouldn't worry about regearing quite yet...but you can if you want.

I have 3" of lift and 33s, all I did was trim the plastic with a razor knife. I have a slight rub when reversing and cutting the wheel hard.
