    Nothing yet...that's why I'm here.
I've got some chips on my hood from kicked up rocks during highway driving. Is there an online vendor that carries the exact colors Tacomas were painted with? Trying to preserve the paint as long as possible and would like to be able to keep it from oxidizing by touching up these chips.

Also, is there a search engine on this site? I'm sure I'm repeating prior posts.

    Thanks

I just ordered a kit from Dr. Colorchip. I've read good reviews on their kits so we'll see how it goes. I've got the same issue, chips out of the hood.

they have some sorta multi stick tube if you just need a dot for small rock chips, that doubles as a wider brush i think

parts dept said $14 but would have to special order for me, approx 2 week delay

204 is the paint code for my truck, they looked it up
can i verify this somewhere on the VIN tag on my driver door?

My dealership has it for $10. But mine didn't match as well as I would have liked. I'm sure that varies by color though

Makes sense. I've started looking up my parts on parts.toyota.com before ordering. My dealership parts lady used to charge me more until i started doing that and bitching that their price is higher than MSRP

I've been happy with Touchupdirect.com. I repainted some rear damage and a couple of filler pieces on the front end as well as cleared them and you can't tell they're there. I also used a small pen from them to touch up all the rock dings on my hood.

That sounds like a standard touch-up vial, if a little hard to get (expensive and slow to arrive) than the last time I bought one.

It's been a while since I migrated to my 2nd Gen, but there should be a sticker on the driver's door jamb with details about your truck. FWIW, Toyota Reference lists 204 (Black Metallic) as a valid paint code for the '96-'99 MYs.

Right.... on the driver's side door jamb on the sticker that says when your truck was manufactured (near the bottom right area of the sticker as you read it). I just bought some touch-up paint from the local dealer since the one I got when I bought the truck 10 years ago was drying up. 1C8 for me (Lunar mist) and they had it in stock. I think it was $11. It has a ball point like pen on the end that you push on to flow a small amount of paint for small rock chips or you can unscrew the top to get to the brush. It is a good match. I hadn't done my hood for a few years and it looks a lot better now. When you are up close filling in the chips, you think it doesn't look so good but when you look at it from a few feet away the next day you realize it looks a lot better. I take a q-tip to clean the chips with alcohol before I use the touch-up paint to get the old wax off.
