What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

If your going to do the gasket, get a good straight edge and check the head and block for flatness. if its out of spec it'll blow the gasket again real quick

 

I was going to take the heads in to get pressure tested and resurfaced.

 

thats not a bad idea. also check the cylinder that failed. make sure theres no cracks. never seen it on a toyota. but had a few Chevy engines that cracked and did the same thing.

 

Downey. Maybe you’ll get lucky and it’s just a hg vs a cracked head

 

@FLBAdrian the part number for the parts kit i have sitting at home is 04112-62150, online it looks like the price has gone up a little. but 365ish is what im seeing, thats the complete valve grind kit (new valve seals, head gaskets, orings, intake manifold gaskets, plenum gaskets etc)

its for an 01. might be a bit different for the 96 (injectors being different is all i can think of). but pricing should be almost the same

My gasket popped at 480,000, 180,000 is definitely low mileage still

 

Gonna have the heads tested or rebuilt since you have it apart? Bottom end was still great right? Didn't knock, didn't burn excessive oil, etc

 

Yeah, this could be a shit show. Right now it doesn't overheat, doesn't steam or smoke, the oil is clean, and there are no misfires. However it is not pulling coolant back into the rad, or it is and it's draining elsewhere. It's not a huge deal so far and it's likely been this way for more than a few months. I'll count my blessings if I make it to WA and plan to tear it apart and replace all the gaskets and old rubber hoses.

 

If you gonna do the hg anyway maybe throw some hg in a can in to get you through your trip

 

My rear bearings ect went out, not going to go Sunday fishing for my birthday. Plan c cause plan B doesn't work.

What bearings did you use for the longfields? I know there is 96-01 non abs, does that sound right?
Im a 04 with abs removed.

 

Going to get heads pressure tested and resurfaced, possibly new valve seals. It was ticking/sputtering like if it had an exhaust leak.
