I agree; that adapter should take care of it.

    What model Hearthstone?

I’m excited to see how it does. I’ve had it in the basement for 5 years, but it’s a large uninsulated space. Today I’m cleaning it and prepping for a coat of satin black paint on all the cast iron.

I'm of two minds regarding double wall pipe. (Nice work by the way, it just got me thinking.) Our stovepipe remains in the house for a good 18 feet. We recently had a new stove installed and they ran double wall pipe the whole way. I wonder how much heat I used to get off that pipe into my living space, that is now going up and out.

I agree that you probably got more heat from the single wall pipe. In my case I needed it for clearances (keeping it as tight to the wall as possible)

I cleaned the stove and removed everything that I could, then taped off everything I didn’t want to get paint on.

I quickly realized 1 can was not enough.. so now I have to wait for Sunday when Amazon will deliver 2 more cans.

I’m using Stove Bright satin black, which is what Hearthstone said they use.

    (This was before paint)

Some, although most modern stoves don't send a whole lot of heat up the pipe anyway. Besides, double wall will draw better anyway.

We have double wall on the first floor, and triple wall on the second floor (loft).

Finished painting the stove, pulled off the tape, and hooked up the stove pipe.

-Still need to cut the hole in the roof and install the chimney pipe.

-After the hardwood floors get refinished next week, I’ll install the rest of the stone around the hearth platform.

-I’m very happy I ordered the different chimney box trim. Thanks to everyone for your feedback!

Is there a advantage of triple wall over double wall?

I was literally just going to ask exactly this. My Hearthstone puts off more heat to the rear (cast iron) than to the side (soapstone), but it's still enough that I'd want something over the wall on that side.

    Eh...
    Pros:
    Marginally better draft
    Closer tolerances to combustibles

    Cons:
    More expensive
    Harder to find
Less heat transfer to living spaces
Takes up more space than insulated

Personally, on a modern stove I'd go double wall until you hit combustibles, then go insulated. Maybe a little more expensive than triple wall, but a lot easier to find, easier to work with and accomplishes the same task in a smaller space.

On an antique (older than 1995-ish) stove I'd go with single pipe for 6 feet/until you hit combustibles tolerances, then go insulated. For instance, for my 70's vintage cookstove (pic below for attention :D ) I ran single wall to the box on the ceiling, because even after circulating through that whole oven's worth of cast iron there's still a lot of heat that comes off of the chimney on an old stove (most of them really are that inefficient).

The Hearthstone in the cellar has maybe 4 feet of single wall and then it goes into a masonry chimney. I could have gone double wall for a slightly better draft, but honestly it wasn't worth the extra expense & hassle. With 30 feet of masonry chimney and a custom OAK, it's got plenty of 'pull' on the exhaust side.

    As said. Distance to combustible.
I imagine that it holds heat for the draft better.
Our loft, where the triple wall is, naturally gets the heat from the lower level. We actually have to evacuate that heat back to the lower areas with a duct/fan/register.

I got the stone for free, and didn’t have enough to do the side wall too.

I don’t need the stone there at all because I’m still abiding by the minimum distance to combustibles. We just figured we’d do as much as we could with it for the look.

Years ago a guy that put a culvert and driveway over a creek cut an ash tree with his excavator. We have been watching it, but this year we noticed that it has died.
Damn ... but firewood is the result.

Plan on having lots of windows open on your first fire after painting your stove. Really stinky vapours given off in my experience (too many times).

I used high temp paint on exhaust headers once. Fumigated a buddy's house.
