Just out of curiosity - are the gears in a new Tacoma (or any new vehicle for that matter) somehow broken in? Why isn’t a big deal made out breaking in the gears on a new vehicle?

Mine were REM polished and I didn’t spend five minutes breaking them in. That was +\- 13,000 miles ago.

Curious if they are quieter now? Maybe after getting new oil in and getting the crud out will help. I've heard it's normal to have some metal particles but that seems like a lot but what do I know. I would send that pic to Nitro or Rogue Off-road and see if they have any insight. Maybe gears are fine now.

Curious about the same thing myself.. Seems like a solid piece of high quality steel bathed in oil wouldn't really need that much attention

Toyota has a 1000 mile break in period that’s similar. Don’t drive in constant speeds, don’t have sudden accelerations, don’t drive in low gear, don’t pull trailers, etc

The only thing missing is the heat cycles which are not needed. It’s like the engine, the engine has been ran and tested despite 0 miles.

Yeah all of it was done. In fact shop had the truck for a week and put on 50 miles small trips etc. the first time I’ve put her to work is off road in Colorado after 1000 miles on gears. Perhaps they are not designed to handle it who knows.

The gears can handle it. Many of us have put the gears through the ringer without issue. Either there is a defect or they installed them wrong.

Just to clarify. If I were to read in the owners manual, this is what it would say, or the equivalent of a 1000 mile break has been done at the factory?

I’ve never followed any break-in procedures for a new vehicle. The salesman never said to take it easy while test driving.

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!

    Final question on the subject.

Do the auto manufacturer’s use a different material/coating than say Nitro for the gears?

Having a hard time wrapping my head around this break-in procedure versus rolling a new one off the show room floor. You would think that if it was a big deal, that there would be some kind of orientation before leaving the dealership. Like don’t tow for the first X miles, and yet there’s nothing. I’m assuming it’s not a concern.

When you take it in for it’s first service, they don’t pull the diff nut and check the magnet for shavings or replace the diff fluid. Or, at least I don’t think they do.

I know guys with brand new Super Duty’s that are towing their monster trailers within the first couple weeks of ownership.

I specifically remember being told about the break in by the dealership when I got my truck. First 1k, dont drive crazy.

If you Google ring and pinion break in, there are many videos and pages explaining how and why.

The easiest thing to assume is that Toyota Polish and cryo thier gears so you dont have to worry about the break in on gears.

Figured that much. Working with nitro now maybe they can put some pressure on the install shop sounds like it may have been the installers issue based on what I’ve described to nitro. And of course the shop just pushed back and said they did it right

If I was you Id call the manufacturer of the gears, and ask for a shop recommendation. I did not use nitro, I used Yukon.

Yeah I’m in the middle of that now. But I’m not sure I want to trough another $2800 expense when clearly it wasn’t my fault.
