well no matter what you do if you do only highway miles you will get better gas mileage.

So technically we can make a new MPG increase mod: Drive only freeway!

    Welcome to the forum Karl!

I have the deck plate mod, K&N drop in filter and run synthetic blend, I also have an ultragauge. Recently i got 25 miles per gallon on high ways doing 55 to 60 the whole way from Charlotte, nc to Raleigh, nc. Then on the way back I took the inter state on the way back doing 65-70 and averaged with the 25 I got 23 altogether the whole trip. That's the best mileage I have ever gotten

I just joined and I realize the post about AFE is 2 years old but I was wondering how much improvement in gas milage I could expect by getting an AFE filter? I have a 2001 prerunner with a v6 automatic and get about 18 now.

In my case no increase, maybe a slight .5 MPG decrease. All I got was the fact it is a long life filter, and it makes more noise when you are cruising at 70 MPH, It moans so much that I put the stock Toyota filter back in. A roar I could live with, but the moaning sounds like a cat in heat.

I've already installed a drop in K&N air filter in my 09 Tacoma TRD V6. I'm now looking at installing a flowmaster exhaust. My main goal is to bump up the MPG a little. Will this mod help or hurt?

Im glad to see im not the only "crazy one" that runs a spread sheet for their gas.
before i put in my ready lift 5 lug kit i got about 24.41mpg all stock
after the lift and new bigger wheels 235/75/15 AFE Dry s filter and removal of secondary with the help of scan gauge II now i get 20.78mpg.
I have bin logging where i get gas and if i see the sticker that says "may contain up to 15% ethanol"
I have bin driving for California to Az a lot recently and some gas stations in Az have the sticker but not all.
I do notice a big MPG loss when in california using the "BETTER" ethanol gas. food for thought if you have a choice in Ca i dont think we have one all the gas stations have the better gas.

Also just a thought people that do more stop and go with notice lower MPG's if they have 4WD all that extra weight that has to be started and stopped will make more of a difference.

I'm not calling you a liar, but I really just don't see how the hell those figures can be in any way true. 31 mpg????? Unless you're driving down hill the entire time, coasting, with a tail wind, while being pulled by a tractor trailer. Especially hauling around a camper shell, that's adding about 200 lbs to your standard load. Are you sure somebody's not adding gas to your tank when you arent' looking?

    I didn't go thru all 8 pages but I can get 28 to 29 mph sometimes if I'm very, very careful. That's with a 2.7 and stick. 18 - 22 if I'm not trying.

the new 2.7s seem to be able to get good mileage if your on the highway coasting. on rare occasions ive been able to hit 29 MPG.

My sticker says 27... best I've ever seen is 23 though. I didn't realize it until late in the trip, but the cruise had the throttle damn near wide open almost the whole time. MY truck doesn't go on many road trips, so I'll try the next one without cruise and I could see getting close to the 27.

I do all hwy driving in a 2010 DC Prerunner, 4.0 with stock wheels/tires. I keep the RPMs at 1900 which is 68MPH displayed, but actually 65 MPH according to the GPS. The average since new has been 21.5 MPG. I recently added a drop in K&N air filter, (left the secondary filter in), switched to Valvoline SynPower 5W30, and keep the tires at 34 psi. My MPG suddenly went up to 24.8 MPG over the last 3 tanks. Life is GOOD!

    I've gotten 30.9 MPG's on 2 separate FULL tanks. 60% highway/ 40% suburban.

I routinely get 27.8-27.9 with nearly zero highway miles. And I'm not driving like a grandpa either. I love this truck.

Are you sure they had the right sticker on there? Toyota's site only claims a max of 25mpg, and that's for the base 2wd 2.7L

The sticker on my '09 2wd 2.7L said 26 MPG Hwy. That's what I get in "normal" driving, but if I'm careful (short-shift and keep the speed down) I can get as high as 28. I've gotten that many times. Lately I've been taking the interstate route (70 MPH speed limit - I'm driving 70-80) to work rather than the 2-lane country highway (55 MPH speed limit - I drive 60) and my average for the last several fill-ups has been down around 25-26 MPG.

Keep in mind that the EPA changed their testing methods for the 2008 model year so that their results would be closer to what you could expect in real-world driving. MPG estimates for pretty much ALL vehicles went down. With the old rating system, it was difficult to achieve what they said you should be able to get, but now the estimates are pretty accurate.
