Hey all, I just bought a 2008 regular cab Tacoma 4x4. I was wondering if a limited slip was an option on 2005-08 Tacomas? I had a 2009 previously that had the stupid auto lsd. I fixed that one by adding Arb blockers and 4.88's lol. However, this 2008 seems like I get a few revolutions of slip and then it grabs and goes. I couldn't find anything on the window sticker, however I didn't know if it was standard in 2008.

All 05-08 trd sports are supposed to come with a clutch based LSD. I have also read some SR5 models also got this diff. They aren’t super common on the for sale section in here, but that is actually how I found mine to install. One thing to keep in mind is your regular cab is a 4banger, which I believe comes with 4.10 gear ratio from the factory (for automatic atleast) and the trd sports are all v6 engines which should come with 3.73 gear ratio. So it may not be a direct swap. You may want to look into older tundras which I believe use the same diff as our trucks. Some of those had LSD and 4.10 gear ratios.

Yeah, the regular cabs all came with 4.10 gears. I was just a little confused as my 2009 I had previously with the auto lsd bs just didn't feel near as tight/aggressive as this 2008. I guess there is always the possibility the previous owner had a lsd installed. He was an avid fisherman and used this truck to get his boat in and out of sketchy spots. I should add that mine is the upmarket SR5 with just about every option you could get on a regular cab.

One way to find out, go find a dirt road and slam the gas! If you have two wheel peel you know it is a lsd. If only one then it’s full open diff. The electronic auto lsd is annoying, as it activates before the clutches can sometimes. When I turn it off the clutches work great though.

Put a jack under the center of the diff. Try to turn 1 tire by hand. If it spins easily and the other side wheel turns the opposite direction, you have an open diff. The exception to this may be the Trutrac. I've never played with 1 of those.

Minor thread jack. I was about to post one of my own. I just picked up a base ‘08 xtra cab V6 and the diff has a sticker that says “use LSD oil only”. I assumed it was a limited slip diff. I guess it might not be. Does anyone with a limited slip diff notice a sound when they turn? I was getting some minor axel wrap and thought this sound was part of it, but now I think I have the axel wrap fixed, and have no symptoms when stopping or starting. I still hear a mild whoomp whoomp sound when I make sharp turns. The CVs feel tight and the sound SEEMS to be coming from behind me.

I’ll have to jack it up and see if it’s LSD some time this weekend.
