Also a must nod for anyone who launches a boat with their Tacoma. After doing this to may Tacoma I got nervous and checked out my F-350. It spends all summer hooked to the boat. Fortunately for me Ford did this factory on my truck.

Nice! I went in the gas tank door. But I wish I would have done the tail light like that. The gas tank door isn’t in the way, I just like the hidden idea better.

This is probably a dumb question that has been answered before, but I can’t seem to find an answer so maybe someone can help me out.

Why does ARB sell a kit for $75 saying that it is designed as a 2 way valve to prevent water being sucked in through the seals when submerged and cooled vs this simple mod which seems to be a one way valve and by ARBs description still not fully solve the issue of getting water into the rear diff.

I just want to be clear so I don’t waste my money on these parts, only to realize it doesn’t completely solve the issue it’s trying to fix.

The OEM vent is not where the water gets sucked in. The OEM vent is a 1 way valve. As the axle heats up, the air inside expands and the vent relieves the pressure. When you dunk the axle in water, the air cools, the vent does not allow air back in, so a vacuum is created in the housing which results in water getting sucked in past the axle seals or pinion seal. The vent that everybody uses in this mod is a 2 way vent and allows air to enter the housing from a safe place well above the water level.

I had it right the first time before I edited my post. Couldn’t remember if the new breather was a 2-way.

getting ready to do this mod. Looks like the plastic that goes along the wheel well needs to be removed. I would like to be able to replace it when I'm done. Does anyone know where to buy the plastic clips that I'm sure will break at?

Much easier to just put the vent behind the tail light.

Just installed mine. I added a right angle fitting mentioned a couple pages back to keep low profile then ran the hose to the brake lines and zip tied it up and along one of the brake lines. Right angle fitting $2.99 and another $2.99 for brass barbed fitting from local hardware store.

Then to be different, I mounted breather into one of the side pockets. I figured with my camper shell the inside of the bed would be driest place for a breather. I tried mounting the breather direct to side of the pocket but the barbed end stuck too far out and I couldn’t get the pocket to fit back into the bed so moved it to the middle.
