I am looking to get a topper for my 07 taco. I am leaning toward a the leer 100xl and the ARE z series. The difference is likely the way it fits to the bed. I want to be able to remove the rail caps and conceal the paint chafe with the marriage of the topper. I am leaning toward the Leer. However, I would certainly like to see how yours fits and hear your opinion.

Did you leave your rail caps in place? Is it a clean install? anything.

How is it attached? I do not want to drill through the rail caps in case I want to run without the topper. I do not want to do irreversible damage that will be seen as poor craftsmanship by a potential buyer in the future.

Mine uses the bedrail system to connect the topper. No drilling or holes.

Same no drilling holes, they use the rail system like stated above. I do beleive imo that snug top, leer and a.r.e are the best quality. Good Luck

I went with the ARE Z series and have no complaints. The installer silicone sealed under the rail caps, no leaks at all. One other thing to consider is that the ARE caps are painted where as Leer are gelcoat. UV/weather tend to fade gelcoat over time.

I have an ARE CX (I think) and I didn't remove the bed rail caps. Sometimes I take the topper off and I didn't want to have to worry about putting the rail caps back on. I put a layer of weatherstripping between the topper and the bed rail caps. At the front of the bed I had to use two layers of 1/2 foam weatherstripping because there is no rail cap at the front of the bed. It still leaks a little at the front corners, but it just runs down the inside of the bed and under the bed mat. Here's a pic.

Leer 100, rail caps left on, gasket front (perfect for letting the pups get some of the AC). Good fit, good quality, and installed in 10 minutes without drilling.

Does anyone know for sure if the leer is coated in gel or paint?

I really like the look of the leer however the ARE has a Yakima rack option. Those parts are all over. If I were to pick up the ARE I would likely get the Z.

    goride, do you know?

I dont know what gel is, im sure its just painted and clear coated, leer also comes with rack packages or if you find a used top you can install rails and put your own rack on, I found my top on ksl 6 months old (basically brand new) for half the price.

Gel coat is like what they use on boats. It's more durable than paint but it'll get oxidized after a while. I have a leer and love it, but it seems that girls don't really like it. Anybody else have that problem? (not trying to thread jack or anything)

might just be your geographical location I love my leer so does my chick. I still take it off time to time cuz I like both looks and the ability to be able to utilize my bed too. get the Leer. Easy to get replacement parts too

My wife was not for it for a long time, she says it looks too grandpa. However, there is a baby on the way and we will need some more room that is dry. When I have traveled to WY, MT, WA, ID, places where the weather is bad for much of the year, most of the Tacomas I saw had toppers with racks. It is just a good way to keep things out of the weather and possibly increase the carrying capacity. Not to mention keeping others' hands off my stuff in my high crime home town.
