Love how nice and slowly it comes down ..

    Quick question

How di you close the tailgate with this device?

    Remote control?

    Clap open, clap closed?

If it operates identically to the 3rd Gen tailgate (which it should), it closes without resistance just like we currently close the tailgate. The dampening is only on the let down.
Clapping would be fun though until it randomly lowers while driving after driving over something sounding like a clap.

I'm guessing you could put a Clapper, but I just lift it up and shut it, there is no resistance going up, only going down

It'll operate just like the other tailgate dampers out there for our tailgates, but won't have the kinking and fraying problem with the tailgate cable and you practically won't see it. If it wasn't for the cable issue, I'd already have the other damper.

Very well done video. Now show us the part you fabricated.

From reading about tailgate hinge problems on the 3rd gen forum, the 1st design hinge was used from 2015 till early 2016. After that they realized a problem and redesigned it. Which design is your hinge copied off from?

My hinge is no copy, it's my hinge that bolts to the second gen tailgate and fits the 3rd gen damper bracket, it looks like neither of those, as soon as I get a chance to clean it up and paint it I'll post some pics

The 1st design damper bracket was only made from August 2015 to February 2016. After that, they used the 2nd design and all of the replacement parts are the 2nd design. The part number 66101-04020 was superceded to 66101-04021. If you fabricated your part to fit the 1st design, sourcing a damper bracket is going to be EXTREMELY difficult. Also, the part number you provide in the video doesn't exist anywhere on the internet.

So, the parts I got from the dealer were all the first design, I got a 3rd gen hinge, the plastic insert, they are readily available, the damper brackets I sourced from private parties, I will check the dealer for sure on monday. The part number is eched into the damper bracket I just assumed that was the part number, I'll get it straightened out monday, I make the hinge to order so no biggy,

It turns out that the earlier 16 tacoma had a fatter hinge pin that made the walls of the insert thin and prone to breaking, after feb 16 Toyota went with a thinner pin that allowed for a thicker bushing for all the later Tacoma's. My hinge is for the newer model, if you have the early model I can accommodate you as well.

Cool. Glad you got it all figured out. When you get all the marketing stuff posted, post the dimensions of the 1st design and 2nd design so anyone buying a used damper bracket knows which design they have.
