Going to test drive a 2007 tacoma today, and take it to a mechanic for a pre purchase inspection. Here's a link to the truck:

    https://www.kijiji.ca/v-cars-trucks...ma/1448792652?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true

The frame hasn't been replaced. How do i determine if the frame is eligible for replacement, or if it's too late?

Any good questions to ask the owner, or the mechanic?

For a frame replacement, if the truck has a lift kit, will the shop re-install the lift kit all covered by the warranty? If the process takes a couple of weeks - does Toyota fund a rental as part of it?

As the tires are 35" , the car needs to be re-geared, what does that entail, and how do I determine if it was done?

    Thanks in advance!

2007 is past the replacement time frame(pun intended). I would pass on the truck on a rusted frame alone...er...well..maybe also for the 6" DB lift.

Do you know the condition of the frame now? May not be an issue. If you have a trusted mechanic that gives you the all clear, looks like a great truck at a great price.
Most likely Toyota won’t help with the frame as the lift compromises warranty, but sometimes they overlook it, as they have with mine before on the leaf spring replacement.
As far as the gearing you should feel it if you need it. Look up the vin, if you have the tow package your gearing is good to go.

I see you're in my province. Just call any local Toyota dealer with the vin. A 2007 in our province will likely show some rust on the frame. Not a bad price (Canadian) for that truck

Thank you. I do not know the condition of the frame now, going to have a mechanic check it out.

Thanks for the comment about gearing, vin & Toa package. I'll look that up!

Sounds good. The mechanic should know those spots? Maybe worth me mentioning?

If the frame shows some rust, what should my action be, run? If it's a small amount of rust vs large amount?

See any better trucks for $10-13k on our local Kijiji? :p

Pretty stoked on this one, hopefully the mechanic tells me the frame is in good condition!

Do Tacomas with tow packages have different gears?

Yes. Normal models are like 3.7 something.. and tow package has 4.11, better for many reasons.

Better ask a dealer with the vin over the phone about recalls. Gotta do that before you drive it

Nope, sorry. All with the V6 engine models regardless of pkg. came from the factory with 3.727 (3.73). Its is only on the 4cyl. that you find the 4.10 gear ratio, such as on the regular cab with a 5-speed, etc.

I’m open to having wrong information. I’m repeating what I found on my truck and what the Toyota service center went over with me.

yeah.... all v6 trucks get 3.73's regardless of tow package or not. Only 4cylinder 6 lug trucks came with 4.10s.

I can tell right now that a sport v6 4WD listed for $10,500 will not last 3 days on a listing. That one is going 3 wks so that raises a red flag for me. Do your research on what it takes to raise a tacoma to run and maintain 35s properly. Its not easy or cheap to swap out that DB lift down to stock. It's worth looking at and test drive but don't get your hopes up and definitely don't buy just because it looks cool.

Once again you guys have steered me off a purchase! This forum is a god send.

I'm now considering this truck, have negotiated to $9,000 Canadian. Frame has been replaced ! Does TacoWorld approve? It does have 300k kilometers, or 186k miles. Is that too much ?

If you’re getting a Tacoma, get a double cab to keep resale value higher & honestly double cab > access cab also ask if the truck has tow mileage.

If the previous owner had the frame sprayed at a Toyota dealer under campaign #173 before 2016-03-31, the original frame would have a 15-year warranty. If the previous owner says he had the frame sprayed, be sure to get the dealer invoice showing work done per campaign #173. If he never got the frame sprayed, it is not eligible. Note Toyota's warranty threshold, if eligible, is rust hole greater than 1 cm in size. Simply having a yellow flaky frame is not enough to fail inspection.

Have your mechanic check for frame rust holes. Ideally it wouldn't need replacement. Frame replacement is invasive. One pinched wire or contaminated connector and you can have electrical gremlins forever. Rest assured though, 80% of the time, Bob the flat-rate dealer tech will be able to re-assemble the truck as well as the factory originally did.
The 6" drop bracket lift has a crossmember welded to the frame. If you get a new frame under the campaign, you'll lose the 6" lift. You will need to acquire OEM-length shocks at that point, too. Another reason not to do frame replacement.
Ask for the shop invoice. If not available, you can jack up the rear axle, put chalk marks on the driveshaft and tires, and count the number of driveshaft turns for each turn of the tire. Re-gearing involves disassembling the front- and rear diffs and replacing the ring & pinion gears. Cost could be as high as 2000 plastic canuck dollars depending on your local shop rate.

Call your insurance company and make sure they'll insure a 6" lift. Apparently some (like Economical) will not insure lifts greater than 3".

Don't most double cabs have a small bed sizes? Larger beds can be usefull on a pickup truck right??
