I'm with you on this, very suspicious timing for 3 of us to brick in such a small window. I've flashed 30+ times myself.

I just don't understand why there is no buffering / local temp storing of the tune to be put on the ECU on the dongol itself rather than pushed bit by bit from the computer.

Those that have gone through the process of putting a different "new" ecu in the truck, If the same part number, it should be as simple as resyncing immobilizer and fire up yes? VIN Number is just data on the ecu that can be sorted with later?

Also, i must say, in searching around I must consider myself lucky, even tho I have a bricked ecu, my part number is abundant and easily sourced. I am going to rethink my flashing strategy, and maybe wait around till @HPTuners chimes in if they can do anything as far as the wire procedure (pushing to MPVI2 first etc) before flashing again. Ill also source another ecu before flashing to have on hand in case things go sideways again.... oh and new usb cables one for the only sole purpose of flashing thats treated like a delicate flower.

Yeah you don’t need the vin# programmed to run the vehicle. You will have a check- engine light on tho, but no limp mode.

check eng due to the vin # ? or something else ?

I mean i have an old laptop with tech stream, so i should be able to get the right VIN on. Whats the process for that within techstream?

I can recover your ECUs for $75 each + shipping.
Just make sure to let me know the CAL ID. I have a master NBD tool for them.

Double check your fuel pump isn't running during a flash. It does on the Tundra and it creates momentary big drops in voltage

Yeah due to no vin programmed. I also used tech stream, I’m sorry I don’t remember right off hand but there is a section that is specific for writing vins.

I got a junkyard ecu, didn’t program VIN, no check engine light, runs great.

BRUH! You would be a life saver. PM incoming.

Would it be wise to pull the fuel pump fuse / relay during flashing?

Worth trying, especially if the flash is slow with HPTuners (no idea). I've never had to because ours flashes the ECU in under 30 seconds. But I've heard of similar stories on the Tundra with 3-4 minute flash times with HPT and they recommend pulling some fuses. (or battery charger)

Yup, i see about 3-4 min flash time as well with HPT and their latest software. Would make sense as i clicked key on after waiting 10 secs, and click write about 2-3 secs after key on... pump could of been priming.

Its just a standard USB C to A cable. I dont even think its a USB 3.0 A plug.... ill check.

EDIT - yeah, just a standard usb 2.0 A to usb C cable.

EDIT2 - also funny, the cable supplied by HPTuners is at the max spec length for usb 2.0.... while i have seen 10-15ft runs of USB 2.0 data work, for something sensitive like we are talking about, a 3ft run is what i would consider safe.

The method implemented for flashing Toyota ECUs is sketchy all on its own.
    Probably just bad luck.

Yup. Honestly if id of known it was such a sketchy process in the first place I would of never touched my original ECU, I would of gotten a same part number ecu that i could mess up... oh well live n learn. Im just glad it didnt happen at work or out n about... i have flashed different tunes in both places a handful of times with no issue... luckily this happened right in my garage.

If someone needs a new ecu just remember that new year ones will have the most up todate calibration and might not be able to do the trd flash to it. Junk yard is the way to go.
