Ive been reading what seems like hundreds forums about different "MPG" increasing upgrades which have all resulted in the conclusion that... they don't work. I wanted to ask the question to see what upgrades people have done and seen noticeable upgrades? I have 32 C rated tires and a custom steel headache rack and tools in the back so its a bit heavy but engine is sock minus a flowmaster 40 exhaust.

Lighter weight applied to accelerator pedal.
Next would be over all weight reduction to truck.
But honestly, slow and easy on the gas pedal works great.

Maintenance. 2008 has a lot of adventures.

Spark plugs, clean throttle plate and MAF.

Tire pressures higher, 35psi+ and good alignment.

There is no magic increase, except skinny rims and tires.

A little more information please. What engine do you have? Stick or auto tranny? What gas mileage are you getting, city, highway and combined? Exactly what tires do you have? Do you drive the crap out of it or do you drive it moderately?

What gas milage are you getting now?

First thing is to make sure it's running right, after that it's all about being light on the pedal.

Go really easy on the gas pedal, that's your best option.

Get a pedal commander and turn the settings on economy+. It’s like a tune for mpg’s

Mileage is about drag at freeway speeds and weight with wheel weight having a disproportionate effect. The headache rack doesnt help. Lighter wheels and tires will help more than less weight in the bed.

What about tonneau covers and cold air intake? Any of you 2nd geners notice any improvements with those?

Only things I’ve read are that tonneau covers might help but that an aftermarket CAI won’t thought it can change the sound of the engine. You already have a stock CAI.

Best bet is wheel and tire combo. Go back to stock size tires with the lightest p-rated tire and light wheels. Rotational weight is key. Ditch any extra weight. Not a lot of options to gain MPG.

    • get you some 205/75/17 tires and some aluminum wheels, this will greatly reduce the rolling weight.
    • Replace your engine air filter once a month to ensure maximum amount of air flow.
    • Remove any interior seats that are not used daily.
    • Remove your radio and speakers
    • remove the bed
    • buy a programmer / pedal commander and use ECO mode
    • keep your RPMs below 2000 at all times.
    • Do not travel faster than 55 mph

As others have said, light truck for lower engine load when accelerating, and light foot, 60 to 80% load(I have a scangauge). Coast down hills and to stoplights as you can safely, also speed kills mpg on a truck.

I use a scangauge to monitor my real time MPG's and I felt like that really helped control the accelerator pedal and taught me when and where to coast.

I also have some big locals push my truck in slow traffic.

out of everything i have ever done to the truck.... mpgs are hugely affected by tire weight / tire rolling resistance. I plan on going to Michelin Defender LTX M/S tires in a SL rated setup this coming up winter, i expect about 1-2mpgs back.
