Plastic melt over studs ?

has anyone dealt with these? Removed and replaced interior trim pieces that have them? This is what I have so far. I want to continue the stripe down the top of the door panels but just the same thickness as the dash stripe with the lower half in black. A harbor freight plastic welder might be handy. Stupid little things are intimidating me!!!

Typically most just cut the back (melted part) off and then glue or epoxy the tab back in place.

Your wording in the op is kinda confusing.... granted I don’t own a 3rd gen, but I have no idea what you are trying to ask...
You want to continue the strip on the doors, but on what pieces ?!
And the doors are intimidating ?!
And you melted plastic over some studs somewhere ?!

 

Does the melted over stud bond with the underlying plastic or just sit on top of it?

 

Just sits on top from what I have seen when I pulled my dash trim.

I would just pick one to experiment with and figure it out.

 

When I do those, I heat them up with a lighter, while pulling it apart. This keeps most of the plastic there when you need to melt them back over. Some trimming will be required to reinstall them, but its minimal.

Also I use just my soldering iron to remelt them.

That’s where I am now. 5x0.80 or a 6x1 threading, maybe. Course thread screw like the rest of the interior. It depends on what the mounting hole size is.

 

I'd heat gun them a little and then pop them off

 

I've successfully removed the studs with a spade bit here:

The design of the spade bit keeps a lot of useable material in the stud so you can melt it back into place.

...And as everyone mentioned, your original post was a bit confusing and it took some time to figure out what you were referring to.

 

Nice work OP. If you black out the chrome accents, IMO, it would look even better.
