Your first call should be to your codes department. You may have set backs for structures for your property that may limit what you can build and how close you can build it to your property line. And that distance can vary between the street side of your property, the back and the side. Best to see what you are up against before you get your hopes up or before you plan too much, and especially before you build.

Your neighbor gets pissed you ruined his view, gets REALLY deep down the building code rabbit hole, finds a technicality, appeals to the county and city zoning board, gets their buyoff, and makes you tear the entire roof off your newly renovated (and nearly finished) detached garage and make the structure 3 feet lower.

One of my coworkers is watching a MAJOR pissing match go down in his neighborhood. We have an over/under going on whether it will end in an arson or a murder.

Depending on code, the powers that be can also hold you hostage until a condition is fixed. For example, a house I was looking to buy had the deck built around the exterior breaker box. If the city had found out about that, they would have locked out the breaker and made the house unserviceable until the code violation was remedied.

PITA headache at the least. Codes departments do not look kindly upon construction without permits. And it would be hard to hide that construction. At the least they would be pissed off and make the process take longer. Probably at least fines if there were no violations and if there were violations then most likely they would make you correct the problems or even tear the structure down. And the fines could be a one time fine for not getting the permit before hand to an ongoing fine as long as the structure in violation stood and was not torn down or corrected.

Edit: Often you can find out what the codes are right online as well as the penalties. But I always like a phone call at least and a personal visit at best.

I live in a neighborhood without an HOA, houses are close where all of our backyards meet. I'm kinda on a hill and I dug down to make the ground flat, but it also will lower how height the building appears to neighbors. I'm in city limits, but not doing any permits strictly because my neighbors do not care.

Great neighbors are a gift. Also you have to build the building nice of course, I'm not trying to put some junker behind the house. You will not be able to see the building from any road though is huge

I've also though about just making a nice garden patio out of it and selling and moving to bigger place. Problem is I love my location too much.

I’ve uploaded photos before, but here they are. Ground work is done, but this is a long process since it’s my brother and me doing everything until it’s time for a meta building.

Personally emptying the garage doesnt gain a lot. It looks like a tight fit that if you had to jack stuff up the jack wouldnt be straight out, pulling a tire would be an annoyance being stuck between in it and the wall. If garage wall was 4+ft away from the car then getting rid of the shelving would help. Idk i get kinda claustrophobic and irritated when im backing into a wall continuously or stuck bewteen the car

you are correct, emptying the garage would solely allow parking and entering/exiting of the vehicle.

most if not all of the "walls" are rotten, as well as most of the shingles needing replaced. the interior structure itself is not bad, I've taken some of the walls off and some of it will need replaced. The big kicker is the plywood floor, it ALL needs replaced, which I can't replace it all without taking the walls off of it and starting from the ground up. Good news is it has a cinder block foundation that is good and I can build on that. I may get one of those "shed kits" and just build a new one in the location of this one.

If you cant work on it in there then i dont see the point personally. Unless you just dont want to get wet, which a carport does as well.

yeah there'd be no possibility of working on it, but the lady does just want somewhere she can park her car, so it can serve that purpose...but I have to have a shed or somewhere else to store all of the garage stuff in order for her to be able to park there.

Hell I plan to build one next summer just to protect from hail. Already had 6 hail storms this year, last nights was golf ball sized. Figured KS would have similar weather.

    This was my cousins place.

We get them bad here. People wonder what I got a brick house and don’t like vinyl fences or siding. Worked great on our place in NJ, here... don’t feel like replacing it every year.

Hmmmm... and a carport probably doesn’t do anything for your tornados though. I could see not wanting/needing one then. lol

Our garage is a 1.5 car, when it’s my wife’s turn for her 4R, we’ll want something for both vehicles.
