Quite often since I installed the pop and lock pl5300 I have to try a couple of times to open the tailgate. This happens with it locked or unlocked. I have found I can press forward on the tailgate with my hand while pulling on the handle and it will open after a try or two. I have the ACI access limited edition roll top tonneau cover which releases from the inside so a couple of times I have been about to panic when I finally got the tailgate open.

Anyone else experience these issues with the pop and lock? And if so any ideas? I have thought about silicon or graphite lubrication but I am not sure where to lubricate and don't want to make matters worse.

    Thanks

I have the exact same problem, and like you said, a small push forward allows it to open.

I haven't had time to investigate at all, but I noticed that the stock handle had lots of lube all over it and the P&L didn't have any. That would be my first fix to try and then go from there if it doesn't work.

I installed it late last year. I honestly don't remember the spacers but if it was in the package I am sure I did. Although I kept everything so I shall go back and verify. Lately it's so hot out I have not had time to check into it. Thanks for the troubleshooting tips.

I have a similar issue. Instead of trying to unlatch it gently, give it a good "pop" and it should open first try every time...at least it does for me.

I HAVE THE SAME ISSUE, except, mine is now the most sever. I too have an Access rollup tonneau, except my pop n lock has completely failed and I can no longer get into my bed!
If you look under the handle, the little plastic tab (cheap damn thing) has broken off on mine leaving the handle completely loose and me at a total loss as to how I'm gonna get into my truck bed.

I'll never own a Pop 'N Lock again!

Any suggestions guys? I need help!

Agreed. Popnlock is a low quality product. Lots of lube on assembly helped when I took it from my 09 to my 2010.

just spoke with a gentleman from pop n lock and he is sending a newly redesigned handle assembly. also told me how to break in to my tailgate to get it open. he said that they beefed up the plastic considerably. so much so that you can stand on it and the handle won't flex. I'm giving them one chance to make it right. if it doesn't work, I'll let you guys know. they are overnighting the assembly along with a new spring for the "auto-lock" problem (even tho i don't have it)

Grease it and hope it is the re-designed handle, lotsa grease on the mechanism and inside the lock cylinder. Normally I would suggest graphite in the lock, grease works better.

Thanks for all the tips...I hope to take it apart this weekend. Any suggestions on what type of lubricant or grease?

Did the parts that Pop N' Lock sent you work out ok? I am having the same issue and am wondering if it's worth contacting them for a fix, or if I should just find another brand.

yes, contact them and tell them to send you the entire new assembly. They made it much beefier and it works flawlessly. The assembly is fully greased from the factory also, which the first version was not. I'm happy with it and they shipped it next day for me. It is worth calling them, because they are aware of the issue and it's a warranty fix. No cost to you.

All they sent me was a new handle and spring. Didn't make much of a difference.

Other mods-full synthetic, carbon filter, de-badged, center console lock.
They sent me a new handle and it hasn't made me panic yet, but it still needs to be tinkered with often to get it to open, and it automatically locks after I open and close it 1x.

Thanks, I'll give them a buzz - I was about ready to chuck this thing out anyway, so it's worth a shot with the replacement parts first.

I'm looking to buy one, but hearing this makes me stop and think if buying from their site will give me the crappy pop n lock or the new updated one with sturdier plastic.
