What should I do about this rust?

Hey, I have a black 06 tacoma. I'm surprised at the amount of rust accumulating on the frame already. They use a lot of salt on the roads in the winter time, so I know that's probably the main cause. What can I do/should I do about it? Its definitely an eye sore? I want to get rid (cover up?) the rust and protect the frame at the same time.

 

sand it then rustolium hammer finish, touch up when needed or every 6 months

 

get a angle grinder with some brillo style disks on it, have at it.... i would put down a coat of rust reformer first than whatever rattle can u desire

 

Rust reformer/converter is the key. Most of that looks like surface rust-so it is a non-issue to clean it up. Get it sealed right and you'll be good to go.

 

I have this same problem with my 06, and I think I'm going to try the rust reformer, too. If you try it, let me know how it turns out, and I'll do the same for you.

rust reformer is made to stop rust from "rusting" or oxidizing metal, regular paint isnt going to do that... you dont have to sand down the frame but u need to make sure there isnt any loose flakes that will stop you from getting the rust reformer on all the exposed metal

do you think a wire brush would suffice to getting loose flakes off, instead of a use an angle grinder/sander?

 

Holy shit, thats alot of rust for an "06".

 

Just go pick up an angle grinder from wal-mart. I bought my black&decker from wal-mart for $25. Your arms will thank you.

 

Amsoil Heavy Duty Metal Protector works really well on the frame and other parts to stop and prevent rust. It sprays on oily so it seeps in cracks, but it dries clear. And it acts as a lube so I sprayed everything except electrical connections on my underbody. Did it on my '01 chevy and it still has minimal rust to this day. Minnesota winters...

 

Not really. It depends on where you are. Up north there is salt/gravel and snow on the roads for 5-6 months of the year. Unless you are fanatical about crawling under your vehicle every couple days to clean it, that's what it looks like.

 

Yea, it sucks...but not much I can do. This past winter was real bad cuz of the two blizzards that hit the northeast. Salt/Sand is brutal on a vehicle

 

Are sparks and gas fumes an issue?

 

Well there shouldn't be gas fumes...otherwise something is wrong with the EVAP system and/or tank. There would only be sparks if you used a grinding wheel. Using abrasive pads should result in little to no sparks.

 

This works, did it to my trucks back in upstate NY.
