Noticing a little difference in our frames...mine's stache 7 but bought used on deal I couldn't pass up and is 29er with 21.5" frame....oversized for me but certainly doable. Like a 8' tall person's bike or being a kid riding your dad's bike, lol. It's a steamroller for sure. Have to keep on top of it on singletrack but is still really nimble for it's size and having rear wheel all the way back. Did you find the bars to be super wide? Mine were 760mm, had to trim them a bit. Took 15mm off each side and 730mm made nice better difference without affecting handling. Is yours 29 or 27.5? Or just smaller frame and comes with triangle filled by seatpost? Diggin the gray color, looks like it matches the cement gray of Taco Pro. Also notice the rockshox fork where my 2017 cam with Manitou Magnum. I have box of upgrade parts for the Magnum in the garage I'm itchin to get in it.....not that it isn't perfectly stellar how it is. Kinda waitin it out to use what's in it and then when maintenance time will do the upgrades. Wheels MFG angular contact BB on hand to replace the GXP as well. Also went with lock-ons, skinny flats, eagle chainring and some ceramic pulleys on rr derailleur. Mine came and still is and will stay 11spd. What brakes came on yours? Our discs look same but calipers look different. Mine are Level T. They've been just fine but wish they ran on mineral oil instead of SRAM's juice which needs to be swapped out periodically, much sooner than Shimano's with mineral oil. Enjoy the new ride.............

The 9.7 is a carbon frame and it’s a 29+. I opted for the medium vs the large frame. Rode both and the large felt like a Clydesdale. Medium is nice and nimble. It came with the Pike, SRAM Eagle GX, and Guide R brakes. Not crazy about the brakes, but that’s an easy upgrade. The handlebars are Bontrager Line Pro carbon and I like wide bars so they’re fine for me. So far so good!

Oh yeah, keep forgetting the carbon frame on the 9's. My bars and frame are alloy. The 21.5 can be a handful but for $1400 instead of $2400 I thought was great score and not too bad keeping it reigned in. Also GX shifter/der/cranks...I changed to the 12spd GX cranks and scored the Eagle 11spd chainring. The 11spd ones mine came with were kinda plain after seeing the Eagle 11spd ring and 12spd GX cranks setup. If you want a spare 12spd GX chainring lemme know because it came on the cranks I bought and will not be using it. Pay for shipping and it's yours...

    Yeah.
I have the previous Stache 9.7 in Large (silver and orange, I like the gray and green better, but oh well). I had an aluminum Stache 9 (the original "new" Frankenstein version of the Stache) in Medium, but after riding it for a while I realized it was a bit too small for me. Mine has the same spec, and I left the bars at 760mm. I wasn't sure if I'd like the ESI foam grips, but now I have them on all of my bikes, lol. I have about 150 miles on it, and my rear brake failed a few weeks ago. It's a warranty item, but I prefer Shimanos. I swapped out to the XT single-pistons, which is what I have on my Fuel (the newer duals seem to sometimes have sticky pistons). Apparently when they built mine they were out of the GX-level chains, so mine has the gold X01 chain on it for some extra bling.

I'd be fine if this was the only bike I had, but I'd also be fine if the Fuel was the only bike I had. I hope I never have to choose, it would be hard.

Bikes are but I'm not.............sabbatical after pressure cooker work/life inbalance over past 5 yrs........starting to look here and there.

Side note, lol....did a nice almost front endo rear wheel wheelie on the commuter early this morning riding with lights and trying to avoid 3 scrambling rabbits. Recovered barely not crashing and only got bruise/scratch on back of lower left calf from pedal and it also hit my heel. Some freaky stuff trying to not crash wearing wet flipflops from going thru sprinklers, lol....but I did it. Also had to skid to stop on blind curve later to avoid nice size snake laying across sidewalk but that was after it got light so nothing crazy there. The rabbits thing was cutting across grass from one greenbelt to another so caught them by surprise and they caught me by surprise...grabbed a bit too much front disc while hitting a divot off the normal path avoiding them. I almost lost handlebars in all this, rolled across the greenbelt I was turning on and off in the grass on other side of it before regaining control. Fun stuff. But I got these.......

Ah lol. I’m on the way to try out the sugar land trails. Need some fresh air after losing this job opportunity and riding in 110 degrees heat seemed like a good way to get my mind off it lol

Looking for recommendations on a hard tail. Budget is $1K to $1.5K. I am 42, 5'6" and around 190 pounds (short and fat) and would like to purchase a bike to get into shape. I will be riding the bike on fourwheeler/motorcycle trails around my house, so there will be uphills, downhills, mud, etc. I went to the local bike shop and I think that I should be on a medium or small. I used to ride freestyle back in the day and GT, Dyno and Redline were the bikes to have. Now, I don't recognize 80%of the manufacturers. I am not opposed to purchasing a bike used either(more bang for the buck). I have been researching quite a lot, but it gets overwhelming quickly. Go...

    Yeah.
    Trek Roscoe 8

EDIT: Dang, too slow. Or Roscoe 7. I find the "8" level in Trek bikes is typically the best bang for the buck, but 7 is good too. The 8 might be a bit higher.

New models are being released, so you can sometimes get a good deal on current year models that are in stock. You do sound in between a Small and Medium.

Nice that’s good to hear! I’m on the border, height wise, between a large and a medium. After demoing both, the medium felt more like I’m used to. I think it’ll be perfect. The brakes just seem mushy, not a lot of stopping force for such big tires. I prefer SRAM components, but Shimano brakes so we’ll see how long it takes to swap them out. I’ll also swap out tires to Maxxis Minion DHF and DHR’s, but not this season. Other than that I’m happy with the build the way it came. I only hope it’s enough bike. I decided to go hardtail to keep me out of some trouble. I’m not as young as I used to be and I’m not really into the crazy stuff anymore. If it comes down to it, I’ll just add to the quiver with another full suspension.

I also demoed the Roscoe 8. I agree the 8 builds are pretty nice and only about $400 more than the 7 build. I was set on the Roscoe 8, except for the color scheme...haha, until I rode the Stache. Better build and just felt more stout.

Figured you'd like those trails. Looks like option to get on other side of 99 still there based on your map. Here's what the 59 bridge area in one of your pics looked like right before Harvey on July 30, 2017. (Ignore fugly fahker holding the bike, it has no kickstand) First ride on the Marin build when I thought it was gonna stay without front suspension. That didn't last long..............

Also completed the gunmetal blue LX group. Here it is now............
