Look for something with low entry rocker, wide and thick. Also flatter rails with less rocker then. You want something that will emulate a longboard. If you have low rockers all around, you have more board on the water and you'll more easily be able to get in to those mushy waves and carry more speed as well. A new one is probably out of your range, but look up the Average Joe from Channel Islands. That's probably the type of short board you'd want if you're trying to transition to a smaller board.

Yeah a new one is a bit out of range for right now. Looking for something around $300 (maxing out) but yeah i'll take a look at the Average Joe and kinda base it off that :thumbsup:

look at mini simmons shapes, planing hulls. they will do wonders in gutless surf.

You might even really enjoy a Catchsurf. It's a foamie but man, they are fun. I took my 6'0 skipper out yesterday to some shorebreak. You can get a brand new one for $300 or less. Look at the 6'0 log. It's got an insane amount of volume and would honestly be a really good transition board to learn on.

same here, a 6'0 or 7'0 log would be great. Would look good next to my skipper, stump, 54" special, beatert and boogie haha

Jesus fuck you got a lot haha. I took my skipper to El Morrow on Sunday and saw a guy out with a 6' log. The 7' would be a good one for me to get for myself and my girlfriend.

hahah me and my bro have collected them over the years, those logs handle pretty good for their size and shape. I rode my buddies at trestles a while back, tons of fun and totally worth the dirty looks I got from the old guys in the lineup

I love those catchsurfs. They handle great. I've taken my skipper out only to RJs and El Morrow but I took it to RJs on a day i thought would be smaller ended up being like chest high and pretty steep and it handled it really well. Wish I had gotten the 5'6 I think it is instead of the 6'0

I think the 5'6 is the perfect size that's what I've got, definitely feels bigger than it really is but handles perfect

Recently moved to LA (South Bay) from SD and I'm still trying to get a feel for the different spots near me. Anyone have any insight into why the surf report would be so drastically different between the North and South side of the Manhattan beach pier? For example, this is tomorrow's forecast on Surfline. Southside is on the left and North on the right.

Don’t know much about manhattan other than I’ve surfed north of the pier and it was super fun and punchy. Also Surfline doesn’t know. It’s like blacks in San Diego. If everywhere is 2-3 blacks usually says 3-4. Doesn’t mean shit. I’ve surfed double overhead when Surfline as 2-3, and waist high when Surfline says 4-6.
it’s always bigger at el Porto from what my friends say. Just gotta learn the spots and look at the open water buoy to see what the swells doing. I find that the buoy reading is more reliable than anything. Keep track of tides and swell periods/directions to dial in the new spots.

lived up there for 8 years. just moved to HB. surf el port 90% of the time. I liked the North part of the lot. there are peaks up there towards the jetty. also in front of the bathrooms and the food shack. you'll know where the peaks are because thats where everyone will be. El porto is not for the surfer who hates crowds. if you can handle big surf that is hard to paddle out in, you'll love porto on bigger days. thins the crowds. follow Michael Durand on facebook. he owns a site called swellmagnet.com. on his facebook he posts stuff about swell all the time, etc. maybe give swellmagnet a follow on FB too.

summer time and south swells, you're gonna have to go up North to Topanga and malibu. I actually miss surfing up there. was a lot of fun once you dial the area in.
