I bought one from an auto parts store so as to always have a source of fire. Well, it doesn't fit. It won't 'lock' in to start the heating process. Even if I manually hold it in, it won't heat up.

Just out of curiosity, do you have an actual cigarette lighter socket or are you trying to use one of the power sockets?
A cigarette lighter won't work in a power only socket and you don't want it to. They aren't insulated for the heat and will damage your dash if used for a lighter.
I wanted to do the same thing with my 2015 (which has power sockets only) and was told I'd have to install an actual cigarette lighter socket.

Yeah, that's gonna be a hard no. Don't even try to use a lighter in a power port. There is plastic in the power port.
