Help! 3rd gen coolant

@na8rboy - Can't speak to your Lexus and I don't know if they are the same, that's a 2gr-fe right? The Tacoma motor is 2GR-FKS.

@helix66 i don't know if it's similar to dexcool, i thought dexcool was green and is what people who have had problems with gelling warn about.

The Lexus GS 350 is same, 15 to present is the 2GR-FKS, 13 to 14 was 2GR-FSE. But was the same engine block.

 

Ok, can you tell me where they were located then?

 

I wish I could, not near either on of them. Out of town, it was over two years ago, when I drained/changed Lexus coolant.

 

Are they the same /type/ of coolant - as in organic, acidic, etc? If so i wouldn’t worry too much.
Ive heard dexcool can become corrosive if mixed with an old school green coolant

 

I'm not using DexCool.

The only 2 fluids at play here are Toyota Long Life, and Toyota Super Long Life coolant. There is no off brand coolant here at all. It's 2 different toyota OEM coolants.

I just found on 2GR-FKS engine pdf. It say's if you mix the two (SLLC, and LLC) Just change it every 25,000 miles, or 24 months. It's listed on page 94 of pdf.

That drain seems waaaay too high up on the block to me. Gravity ain't going to allow very much to drain out from that location.

 

Great thank you guys, that at least eases my worry for now. I will still want to drain in fill with SLLC but that makes me breath a little easier.

I agree with @BarcelonaTom67 that diagram shows it too high on the block. I looked all over the drivers side and cant see anything. There is a bolt that looks to be pipe/taper threaded, but there is no drain port cock like has been on other models (where you'd hook a hose to, to help drain) on it either. It also was in tight, torque spec on it the proper drain plug is only around 40 ftlbs or something, and i was leaning on this and it wouldn't crack. I was afraid to force it, not knowing if it's the right plug.

If it was me, I'd leave it for a while. Maybe hit it when you tag 100k?

The full 3rd Gen Service Manual might have more information? It is floating around this forum somewhere.

 

I just passed 40K on my 2017 Off Road, and still running the original factory coolant. I have been thinking of changing it at 50K.... but would like to have the question of 'Where are all the drains' before I start crawling around under the truck

 

If and when you do find it. It is a tapered plug, not port cock like older models, and torque is 13 N m ( 9 ft-lbf) per Manual.

 

Yep you're right it's 9lt lbs not 40 like i said earlier. I'm pretty sure i found then the right plug but it would not budge. It was in way tighter than 9ftlbs. I was afraid of really leaning into it on an aluminum block.

I'll see if can get a picture of it later this week.

 

I'm going to keep searching to see if I can confirm I found the right plug, it'll naw at me until i get it changed out. Good to know i have a buffer of until 100k if i need it though.

 

There is a thread sealer on it. That's why it will not come out easily. I know what you mean, by cranking on it to much. Always scary, with aluminum block.
