Rust on Frame with A/C drain mod fix

I had done this on my last Tacoma, but haven't yet on my 2019.... I guess because for North Texas we've had a relatively mild spring and summer (so far) and I haven't run the AC much. I'll get around to it along with the diff breather deal.

By not owning the truck yet, this might sound stupid. Do you have to remove the passenger side wheel to have access? Can you just turn it? Also, how difficult is it to remove those 2 clips without breaking them? of course lol

I am picking my 19 up next week and I am planning to do this mod as soon as I get it back to my place (4hr drive). Or did they extend the drain hose on the 19? I highly doubt it.

 

It’s easier to remove the wheel, but I guess you could just turn it all the way to the left.

Removing the clips is a piece of cake. I used my $5 clip removal tool from Harbor Freight, but you can do the same thing with careful use of a flat head screw driver. They’re intended to be used as an access point, so they’re fairly robust.

I spent more time gathering up and putting away tools than I did actually doing the mod.

 

If I were home, removing the wheel wouldn't be a problem as I've got the jack, impact gun and all the tools . But I will try turning the wheel all the way and see if I can do it. Thanks for the quick response

 

I didn’t even turn my wheel and they are 33’s.. It was extremely easy just taking off the little cover that hides it and reaching around it. I also just twisted and pulled the clips by hand and they came out in one piece easily.

I did this over the weekend, have any of you had any issues with the heater hose popping off the AC drain? Just curious as it was kind of a pain to get in there and since it's not see through I can't exactly tell how far in the hose went before I clamped it. So far so good for you guys?

 

Wheel removal not needed or clips. I ran the hose from below and I reached over the top and attached the hose. I lubed the hose so it would go in easier then clamped it.

 

Exactly how I did it. With stock wheels and tires there's plenty of room with the wheel turned and easy access from under the hood.

 

If you do break one or 2 you can buy the push pin type at your local O'Reilly's. Or a body shop would probably sell you a couple.

 

So it's been a few years. What do your frames look like now?

 

Was thinkin maybe just spraying some coating to protect where it drips, i dunno if i can trust a hose not getting clogged up or whatever. I usually wash my car once a week anyway (or try to at least,, depending on the weather) like a quick wash spray down, specially on winter times just to get the grimey snow off the truck...anybody live up north having not done this and hows the frame?

 

I've done this on other cars I've owed. It seems that a lot of cars just dump the a/c condensation out without regards for where it lands. My son has a 98 crv that rusted through the sub-frame right where the water dripped down over the years. I had to replace the sub-frame with one I got from the junk yard. it wasn't a fun job. I'll do the taco tomorrow.

It's a simple, easy mod that anyone can do in a few minutes. I can't imagine why anyone would not do it.

 

Got this done on my 2018 with 7000 miles last night. I didn't like the way it torqued the heater hose going through the holes so I just zip tied it off in a different spot but the result is the same. Hopefully no issues with where I tied it off, but I'll check on it every once in a while. Great idea doing this... I didn't have any rust forming yet but it definitely would have happened.

 

I'll probably do it tomorrow, I've done all my own work on all my cars for over 20 years. I'm pretty sure I can handle it. Thanks, I'm up north in the land of snow and road salt, fighting rust is a year-round job.
