But driving slow is boring and you lose time, and time is more precious than a meager mpg saving. And small light stock tires mean your off-roading will suffer and be quite limited. Seems like the best way to save gas money or increase mpg is not buy a truck if one is not going to use it as a the off-roading adventure machine it was meant to be.

My bone stock 2007 AC runs 70 mph highway and I consistently get 21mpg. I can't complain.

Some real hypermiling practices, but no eoc, partial grill blocks etc I am averaging 29.1mpg over the last 17k miles. Average about 500 miles tank. Fuelly.com look up silvertacoma 2009 ac prerunner. Good mpg can be done but I live in a rural area with no city traffic to speak of except 2 trips a month for shopping.

I beat the living piss out of mine. Manual 4x4 4.0 double cab on 285/75/16 Toyo AT2's and I'm keeping it right around 16 in the city and MAYBE 19 on the highway if I leave it in 6th and don't drive like a lunatic.

I use BG products in my truck and it has made a significant difference in MPG and performance. My 2 cents.

Anything done to spend less on fuel should cost very little money considering the difference in annual fuel cost between 16 and 15 mpg, at $3.75 per gallon and 10,000 annual miles is only $156 or $13 per month.

10k miles! o_O Not a chance. I’ve hit 44k a year the last two years in a row. And no, it’s not a work truck. I just love road trips.

To save money by coasting to lights or easing acceleration or reducing my speed on the highways from 80ish mph to 65 is something like a 115 extra hours of driving a year. F that. That means I can’t drive as far on road trips or waste more of my life on the boring driving back and forth to destinations.

That to me is worth the loss in money, but a gain in time.

Did you correct for the over running ODO?

It's off the same % as the MPH.

Cam gears. 2-3 more MPG and more power, no problem.

Keep in mind my commute scene: like 6 cars on the road, 630am, taking the main surface streets so the lights stay green forever. @eltacoutah has a similar time of commute as I recall.

Just bump the gas enough to get up to speed and just sorta hang out. Put your arm out the window, enjoy the tunes. Light turns red up ahead like 200 yards? Foot off gas, let it roll.

Now on my commute home I get like 14.x because I wanna go home and not be at work in work clothes.

I love road trips too but have averaged less than 10k miles a year on the Tacoma over the past 5 years. Even at 40k miles a year it's only $625 in annual expense....$52 per month.

One issue I have come up against more than once is trying to keep up at 80mph to the Utah speed limits and using more gas than I should, which then dictates how far you can make it offroad before worrying about bingo fuel.

@BillsSR5 I commute round trip 83 miles a day and average 21 mpg's. I'm on a leveling kit with 285's and a tonneau cover 2011 OR. MPG is ALL about driving style period. Doesn't matter what anyone says, unless you have a fuel system issue. Keep it under 2k RPMS all the time if possible. I average better than my brother who has a 16 with stock tires because he drives with a heavier foot than I do. Don't race from light to light, take it easy and stay in the right lane. On long trips I average close to 23 mpg fully loaded, even if the speed limit is 80mph I keep the RPM's under 2k. I had a 4 banger 1st gen and it was the same thing and I averaged close to 28 mpg.

The amount of money one would have to spend to increase your mileage from what it is now, would probably take 10 years or more to make up for it in gas savings. That's if you're lucky.
I think that changing ones driving style and keeping up on maintenance would reap the same, and possibly higher rewards.

    Just my opinion though.

Possibly. I'm in no position to speak for NA, but it is a mod worth investigating for those with NA. HPTuners and cam gears? That's always the right answer.

my 4 banger is auto 4x4 and can barely get to 23 mpgs if at all hearing people saying they are getting 25 mpgs in a v6 with oversized AT tires and bed racks, lifts seems a bit wishfull thinking IMO. my truck is all stock and maintainence is up to date , air filter new, p245s at 30 psi :notsure:

It’s doubtful that those numbers are coming from round trips. Instantaneous dash readouts put up big numbers when slowing down, and drafting. One way trips that end at a lower elevation than they began also result is great numbers, but the return trip doesn’t fair so well.

On a side note. Modern fuel injection adjusts to a plugged air filter. It makes minimal difference these days. Carbs and to some extent VAF sensors would yield a rich condition with a plugged air filter, but MAF sensors, intake air temp sensors, and O2 sensors all allow for pretty good adjustment.

I was going to do the exact thing but consumer reports has the AT2 with less rolling resistance than the defender. Doesn’t seem right to me because usually an AT tire with more and wider cross channels typically has less resistance. I’m debating on the AT2 or defender.
