Blind meaning it's one most easily forget or simply just don't know what that little thing means. I'll bet most think that the little stop sign is just telling them the bus is going to stop.... not that they need to stop as well.

If it's your first visit to the area then I highly suggest a visit to Carlsbad Caverns National Park. It is truly a marvel of nature nobody should miss. I was born and raised in Carlsbad so I've been a dozen times and it never gets boring. It may be 110 on the surface but it's cold down there so take a jacket and rubber soled shoes. There's also a paved scenic loop road in the park.

For the more primitive adventures you'll need to go west of Carlsbad on Hwy 285 about 12 miles to the Brantley Lake turnoff. But go left on NM 137 instead of right to the lake. About 35 miles is the village of Queen. Not far past it there'll be a sign for Guadalupe Ridge road. It's a gravel road that a Prius can handle but very scenic vistas abound. You want to go left on it. Where the gravel ends is a camping spot. There are trees so it's shady. I've camped there in summer and it wasn't too bad. No water or facilities of any kind. Just fire rings. And the beginning of trail 201. Where things get interesting. I see you have a 3" lift same as me so you should be okay on it. there are some stepped areas that you might need a spotter for. I go alone so I duct taped a gopro underneath, bluetoothed to my tablet. American ingenuity.
It's pretty narrow and bush/cactus/tree-lined so if you don't want pin stripes, don't go. It takes you to a ranger lookout tower and a much better gravel road. You can go back on it or the way you came in. There's a side trail called 201A that is not for the faint of heart. I've been down it in my brother's full size truck with 6" lift but I haven't gotten the balls yet to try it in my truck. It goes to a pretty canyon with a spring and hiking trails.

If you don't want the pinstripes you can take the gravel road to the lookout tower. It starts on the ridge road and is called Cougar Canyon Road. You'll come to a Y and can go left on it. There are a lot of different roads and things to see in the area. Sitting Bull Falls is really nice and easy to get to. It has water, bathrooms and picnic tables. It's a short hike to the falls where you can cool off in the shallow pools under it. It's day use only but there's a camping spot with a fire ring just outside the park. No shade at all there though. There are a lot of places for primitive camping. Anywhere within the NF is good. Lots of places with fire rings.

Keep following signs on NM 137 and you eventually get to Dog Canyon Campground. Which is really nice. With hiking trails. It has tent pads and RV parking. You can't park close to the tent pads so you gotta carry your stuff. I have RTT so had to pay for RV parking. It's actually just across the state line in Texas.

Most of the area is open range and there are a lot of cattle and deer and winding roads so be careful. Also a lot of oilfield truck traffic on the paved roads. Any other questions, just ask.

To tack onto what Dave said, here is a video my buddy shot out there in 2017. He lives near Tijeras.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NjLVeIOqMW4

He also added "If people are visiting NM with the intent of off roading, please advise them to bring 10x more water than they think they will need, extra food, extra gas and extra tires.

These places can be 50 miles from the nearest cell signal and you dehydrate quickly.

you have to be bear grills to survive without supplies"

I consider myself an accomplished reader. It's all I did as a teenager, I'll admit it, I was (am) a nerd. I have read all the books you mentioned plus more; essentially all the classics. Hell, I've read The Silmarillion 3 times just for fun.

I only made it about halfway through War & Peace before I died of boredom.
