Told ya. Find another shop, or 5! 2800 is robbery for a 200 compressor, add a condenser for 100, and labor for 100. JFC

So I guess I missed that part. Only reason to change the evaporator is if it is leaking. Is it? I don't know either.
Other than a blinking light, not much to go on.

If compressor goes bad, the evaporator is one of items that need to be replaced along with the compressor

Where is the evaporator located, and why does it need replaced?

In the dash, gets clogged with debris from the compressor letting go, can't flush em (passages too small). So typical parts to replace when a compressor goes is: compressor, evaporator, expansion valve, dryer (which is part of the condenser). Older cars you can flush the evaporator and dryer is separate from the condenser

Let's see if I follow. The compressor fails and grinds its self up. That does happen. Comp still pumps some and sends debris to the dryer in the condenser. Fine debris manages to get thru that and makes it to the fine mesh filter right before the TXV. Then it plugs up the passages in the evaporator and cannot be flushed. Is that what you are saying?

Yup, normal procedure. Been there with a cust's vehicle when their aftermarket warranty would only pay for a condenser and compressor and flush, new compressor shit the bed right away.

Right away? And a plugged up evaporator caused it? Manifold gauge pressures would show that immediately.
Anyways, done arguing on the internet for tonight.

Debris in the evaporator got into the new compressor once fired up and ate up the new compressor

Filter before the TXV Valve Should prevent the Evaporator / TXV from getting contaminated with fine particles.

You are describing a rare scenario. There is a reason most corporate insurance policies such as the one you referenced stop at the compressor and condenser. Seeing metal contamination beyond that is just not common enough

I replace compressors all the time with just a basic flushing of the lines. I'll disconnect the inlet line to the condenser, take a look at how much metal is in there, explain the risks and benefits to the customer, and go from there. If the manufacturer that I'm buying the compressor from wants the condenser replaced I'll bring that up too.

It's not about how thorough the mechanic wants to be, it's about how thorough the customer wants to be, what kind of risk they want to take on, and how much they want to spend.

But who knows, maybe the evaporator was leaking like a motherfuker and the drain tube was puking refrigerant oil.. those are the AC leaks I like, easy to find and they pay good lol

Ask them why they want to replace the evaporator. Is it due to metal contamination? Evidence of refrigerant leakage?
