SOLVED - Can you can Install a '98-00 LOCKING Gas Door on an 01-04

As the thread title suggests, I'm curious if the size of the 98-00 lockable gas door is the same size as the flip version on the 2001-2004 model? Anyone have a couple to check against?

I'm not a huge fan of the locking gas cap on the '01 I have, and I was considering swapping it, but didn't want to waste my money. Based on the pictures I've found, I want to say "yes, it is possible" but don't have the two parts handy to physically verify... I'll be around a '98 in about a week, but was hoping to get an answer before then.

Any help is grateful! Specifically would like it if someone has done this or if they have both vehicle years that they can test?

You can swap them, you need the door and the plastic piece behind it.

Cool idea, I really like my locking fuel door. Make sure you get the matched key for it (unless you can have the lock re-keyed).

 

you cannot have the lock rekeyed. once you remove the face plate you won't ever get it back on. ask me how I know. I now have a door with a hole in it. The plastic bit broke, so it never locked anyways... would be nice if I could find a regular door in the same color!

 

Like JKO1998 said above, the 98 locking fuel door won't lock without the appropiate fuel inlet box part# 77290-35020, (it has the catch that the locking lever on the door goes behind), the non locking just has a vertical clamp on the door that presses over a plastic stud. I've matched up the colors, by ordering one from a wrecking yard 1500 miles away, just check their inventory to find the right color truck and ask if its available, or ebay. If it has a scratch, a semi cheap way is use a Mothers PowerBall Mini that attaches to a cordless drill and the appropiate compounds. If you use a big buffer, you might burn through the edges. The fuel inlet box does not come with the small flat nose rubber door stops (Cushions) you might be missing one, it takes 2, part#90541-06058. And if you choose to put one together, the remaining parts and #'s: Fuel Lid 77305-04020 (comes in black), Cylinder Lock and Key Set

69058-35140, it does have the lever on the end, but not the retainer to hold it in the Fuel Lid. Retainer is 69581-13010.

What is the reason for having a locking door? Has someone been pumping gas out of your truck?.. I doubt it, ask me how I know.
I needed to drop my gas tank to replace the fuel pump and tried to remove the remaining gas in the tank and after 30 min of trying I gave up. The rubber connecting hose has such a curve and ridges that its impossible to get the hose in the tank it self. Ended up dropping the tank with 3/8 of gas in the tank. Not a fun experience.

 

Yesterday some dumb ass broke my lock and stole gas from me, I'm not kidding. So if you think a lock will stop theft, it will only slow them down. Now my door just swings around. I need to find a replacement lock or plastic piece.

 

Hehehe - not to prevent-theft, don't care about that! Just prefer the look and function more than the flip version and locking gas cap.

If I understand, the OP wants a locking gas door instead of the flip version? I would like to have the flip version instead of the non-operating locking door I now have. Is this swap doable? What part number(s) do I need? Thanks, Stan
