Ive got an 06 Tacoma thats developed a knocking noise that seems to be getting slightly louder. Carrier bearing is in rough shape and has to be replaced, all u joints are solid with zero play and this is the only source of play i have found, i feel like it was never this wiggly and was silent. Can anyone confirm if my driveshaft is fucked? Thanks!

Heres a video of the knocking:

replace the carrier bearing, that fixed the knocking I was getting, and given that you said its in rough shape, and with that much play, I'd bet that's a major reason for the problem.

Also wouldn't hurt to lube up the u-joints and slip yoke, you know, just for fun.

I plan to lube the slip yoke after i do the CB, it has play but i can make it do that sound without flexing on the carrier bearing. Guess i will have to start there and see. Did it sound like someone knocking at the back of the cab real fast right as you do a semi hard take off from a full stop?

For sure start with the carrier bearing to eliminate that, especially if you know its bad

While your truck is on the ground (weight of the truck on the rear wheels), go ahead and make sure your rear axle u-bolts are torqued down to around 75ft/lbs. I had a rattling noise in my truck and it ended up being the ubolts were improperly torqued (too low)

    Could be axle wrap

it sounded like a "thunk" when I started, or stopped. Unless I did either veeerrrryyy gently. Like idle away from a stop, then slowly throttle, or just coast down to a stop. Basically any "sudden" change from start/stop. But yea, came from right at the back of the cab, like, under the rear seat area is where I felt like it was coming from.

I had a similar noise on my 05
Turned out to be the slip joint in drive shaft
I believe on 05 and maybe some other years there was no zerk fitting on drive shaft so after some time they make a similar clunk noise on take off.
Didn't have so my play in carrier bearing so you might be right if not try greasing slip joint some how

i just had my driveshaft replaced...was like 1200.00. I had axle wrap bad and prob gone. I also had all new U joints and center bearing done prior but the shaft was weak. Once replaced wrap was gone but I still did traction bars to help it in the future.

No play in the U joints does not mean a good U joint under all conditions. One of mine was frozen solid and therefore "no play". The replacement solved the problem.

I have two sealed ones and one with a zerk and it still takes grease fine, i had 2 frozen ones that wouldnt even take grease. That got rid of my takeoff squeaking but the knock is definitely coming from the slip yoke.

Damn wish Id seen this thread before the NE meetup haha. I woulda talked to you about it. Im chasing the never ending drive-line vibes after installing the RXT leaf packs. I was greasing the driveshaft last week, cause that seems to help just a little, and while I was there I noticed that I've got about 3/8 of an inch of play up/down in the carrier bearing. It also sounds a bit 'gritty' as I move it around.

Not sure what is normal.. How do you know your CB is shot? Ill try to upload a video of the play in my CB and post during lunch.

It almost looks like you have some flex in your slip joint, which I dont have. Also dont have the knocking sound. Just a ton of vibrations around 65-68mph

3/8" is a lot of slop- change it. There are several threads with instructions and also the Dana PN (Toyota OE) that you can buy online

Ughh I was afraid that was going to be the answer haha. I still haven't had a chance to upload that video, but its close to 3/8". Doesn't that seem like a lot for only having ~68k miles on the clock?

The slip joint has flex like mofo and it was never like that before. But you CB is shot if it looks like mine does in the video lol Edit: just realized the vid doesnt show my carrier bearing amount of play, i will upload one tomorrow cuz my CB is doneee) First it was squeaking on takeoff which turned out to be ujoints, one being badly trashed and one being frozen and not taking grease at all. I work in a dealer and have been under lots of tacomas with good carrier bearings and you see the rubber flex but you cant actually move the driveshaft. At this point im hoping this spicer(Dana) carrier bearing fixes the issue if not im going double cardan from tom woods. If you wanna order one too here is the link for a 4x4 https://www.ebay.com/p/Spicer-50020...aft-Center-Support-Carrier-Bearing/4006409259.

I was up north the last 2 days loaded with camping gear and i had to leave stops at a coast because it felt like someone was hammering my floorboards with a mini sledge. So for now i think i will drive my beater lexus till i have my replacement

Well i had some time to tinker with my driveshaft finally. Install went smoothly and everything looks great besides the play in the splines. My truck has been in a T bone style accident in the past and my driveshaft stub was once ripped from the female end of the shaft. There is a blue molygrip spray or sort of dip material that goes on the splines to keep a smooth mating surface and take up slop in the splines. My driveshafts stub no longer has this coating and is SUPER sloppy feeling. Tested the same female end on an aftermarket driveshaft i found laying around and it fit super snugly. So after replacing carrier bearing and center u joint i am knock free but still have slop in the spline due to lack of moly coating. Going to give it to a local machine shop for a fresh rebalance and to have a new coating applied to the stub.
