i still don't understand why Toyota deems IL to be a cold climate state but not MO or IA, KS, NE, SD, as far as my Due diligence has shown so far

No idea. It does get really cold in the winter but we don't get a lot of snow honestly. But when we do they go HEAVY with the salt

Cold climate isn’t the full story... It’s high road salt use which determined the states

I don't love it but I don't hate it either. It's just the work horse for me and my dad, pretty sure he actually likes it

perhaps more icy type of weather? ice probably is worse than snow for driving in my experience, 4wd still has difficulties on sheets of ice

A2a is terribly vague and confusing :facepalm:and does not answer the Q2a at all
NE,KS are not even contiguous states in all this so there must be no cold winter problems!

They actually estimated like $2000 damage and then when we towed it home and had it evaluated by a 3rd party it was like $5000

You’re missing the point. Cold weather isn’t the qualifier. It’s the high road salt use in the state.

i think they are missing the point on not informing me over 10 years ago that this is potential problem and to be better aware
I have traveled to IL and WI in the middle of the winter before!

Traveling through a state that uses a lot of road salt is nothing compared to living in it where you’re driving in it every day...?

the first car I looked at before I turned 16 was a subaru in 1988 with a 4wd
they wanted $500 more than my paper route had allowed me to save up for after atari 2600 game cartridges

Unless there’s actually a hole through the frame, there’s no problem to fix. Surface rust is normal.

I had the frame replaced on my 2005 which I promptly sold to buy my 2016 because I didn’t trust the dealer doing the work to not f it up. Turns out I was right as a couple days after it was done the truck lost brakes because they didn’t tighten the lines.

If you want a new frame, it’s only $13,000.. or you could buy a new truck.

there are holes where the water drains out!

perhaps the Official TW Burrito Inspector can give it a proper expert evaluation this weekend, because there is no one local yet that can give me any good answers, their heads are all stuck in the muck

it just befuddles me from pics on TW i have seen with later 1st gens (2oo1-2oo4) that have large frame perforations yet no noticeable body panel perfs to go with it!
the body panels are much thinner metal so i really don't know what to think

every time i pull onto the dealer lot to check out the new Corolla hatchbacks the salesguy keeps wanting me to trade in my truck, i recently found out he is a transplant from Belleville IL (so weird!) to Bellevue NE
