I have a 19 Tacoma Off Road, was at the dealer yesterday and was getting service done to my truck . I had some time to kill was walking the new car lot and saw the OEM Tonneau cover on a Tacoma . Looked like a nice cover , and looked to fit really well . Just wondering guys that have one likes or dislikes about the cover . And was wondering is there a better cover than the OEM one ?

I have the Extang Tri Fold 2.0 and I think it's very similar to the OEM but may have some better features.

Dislikes - It leaks, even when it's parked, very bad while driving in rain. Heavy, and only opens 2/3, front 1/3 stays in place. I didn't order it, came on truck in dealer trade. There is a lot better covers out there. No real likes about it.

As I understand it, the OEM Hard Tonneau (isn’t really OEM, as Toyota sources them from a third party) can’t be purchased after the fact. It either comes from the port with it, or it doesn’t.

I ended up buying a LoMax Hard Tri-Fold Tonneau through @truckalter here on TW. Got a great deal, and it was literally delivered to my door 24hrs after order. It fits great, functions exactly as desired, and does what I need.

I have one and have had no issues with water leaking in the bed... The only points where that could happen are at the edges of the tailgate but you can always put a rubber seal around that to fix it if it is an issue (hasn't been for me). I definitely recommend the OEM cover but if you want better get a Diamondback cover - they are by far the best out there but you'll have to pay for it.

I have the OEM cover. Was already installed when I bought the truck. My only problem with it is that the panel close to the cabin does not lift open like other tri-fold tonneau covers. If you need to load something that takes the whole bed, it has to be removed. I recommend you go with and aftermarket tonneau. If mine ever breaks or fail I will get the bakflip mx4.

I like the OEM cover for the ability to replace individual parts as they break. But you could make the argument it shouldn't be breaking in the first place. If you can get one used for 200-300 you will be happy with it.

I have the oem one, came on my truck. I like it. The rear corners of the bed leak a little bit only when it’s really pouring. Very minimal. Folds up easy, latches work good. The only issue is what you’ll probably have with any of the covers is with snow freezing to it making glaciers. But just fold and it’ll crack apart. I’m sure there are better ones out there but, I have no issues with it.

It's not always true. And yes, I have read that these OEM covers cannot be purchased separately if it isn't installed at the port originally. However, my case is different. I bought the truck without it, and was curious of throwing a bed cover on. I asked my salesman if he could throw me a good deal on an OEM one. He said no problem, $999 installed. I said, oops I didn't expect it to be that much, I'd go with an aftermarket one.

The only place mine doesn't leak is at rear corners, because of added tailgate seal. Wish I could figure out why it leaks so bad, and how to solve leakage. It just pours in along the sides. I have to keep everything in sealed containers.

For $999 I'd definitely go aftermarket. I got mine from a TW member for $400 (brand new) since he was getting a camper shell.

    Like, so many.
I had one. It was just OK. I’ve got a Rugged Cover 2 tri fold. It doesn’t leak.

Part of the water in the bed issue in these is that the multiple bedside panels themselves are not sealed together (look near the bedrail) and water kicked up from the tires will go up and over, and into your bed. I imagine it could be caulked easily enough.

Also, i despise my OEM cover. Big, bulky, doesn’t get completely out of the way, leaks water, and $$$

I sold mine- others do too, so if you want to save money on OEM, get a newer used one.

This should help with the water leaking near the tailgate - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IPQWXZQ/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8. As far as the sides leaking, I'm not sure since mine doesn't have that problem. Got lucky I guess.

Quick tip for those who have leaking on the rear panel. Sometimes that panel does not latch all the way and you have to press on the top of the panel near the latch to get it to latch correctly. You will here it click when you press on it that will let you know it's latched and you won't be able to lift it up that much. You can tell if it's not latched all the way because you will be able to pick up the cover at the tail gate about an inch. I got mine cheap off a friend who got a topper and didn't need it anymore. I like it but it does leak like people have said. The tail gate seal above does help and you can do a few more things to stop the water coming in if you want to spend the time. I had to pop off the side rail caps when installing so I added some weather stripping under them to stop some of the water coming in. I also went around the top of the bed near the tail gate and plugged some of the open spots and holes with some black silicone. It is a lot better than it was but I still get water back there thru the seals where the panels flip. If yours didn't come with it I would look at an aftermarket one they probably won't leak as bad unless you get a great deal on an oem one.

One thing with the OEM cover, is that though it says no-step, it can withstand my 190lbs, at least near the edges on foot, and i’ve thrown an air mattress atop it and slept on it in the desert. This does ruin the seals, since it rests on them, but mine was a sieve anyway

The Extang Tri fold 2.0 has worked very well on my truck for 20 months now. The leaf nearest the cab cannot be folded up, but you only have to undo two wing nuts to remove the whole cover. One man job to remove/reinstall at least on my short bed, cover is very lightweight.

A lot of the gear you guys talk about like Prinsu racks and light modules do not survive Canadian winters very well, but there is no sign of the rubber bits cracking or deteriorating on the Extang so far.

I found it very helpful to mark the bed rail brackets with a grease pencil when you have cover aligned, simplifies the reinstallation a lot.
