Yep, scary as hell dude! Service advisor said they've seen many for this issue, from what I've quickly looked up
it could be one of the computers or maybe the CPS. He couldn't give me any info as to what it could be but he just
agreed to a loaner so I'm glad about that.

    I'm on 04B04

Please let us know if they figure out what the cause is.
So many 'common issues'... even our development trucks rear diff is now leaking. less than 10k miles..
Of course, a recall for that lol. Still love the truck though.

Mine is leaking...again. First time, right around 10k miles. Performed the TSB on it (even though the '18 didn't technically qualify). Started again about 5000 miles later.

    Absolutely will do.

Sheesh only 10K? It's baffling that they can't figure these things out and get a perm fix in place.

I had that too at about 10k on my 2016 and had them do the fix, haven't checked it in a while,
guess I'll check that too today when I drop it off - this will make Issue #15 for me with this 3rd Gen.
that I've had to have service address.

edit: :D just ran out and checked, diff still looks good

Anyone know what the changes are in the 2.0 update from the 2.0 released the other day? Thanks.

IIRC, The recall was due to "improper torque specs being used at the assembly plant(s)"

They wound up doing my rear diff recall twice.

First recall appointment the truck had less than 5K on it, prolly less than 3K it was only a couple months after purchase. Diff looked clean, they checked/torqued the bolts, and called it done.

I generally check the truck before and after service to be sure they did what was asked/PM'd and that I was aware of any possible issues. I think it was when I scheduled the 10K service,m I was checking skid plate (noting dirt on it really), belts, as well as shocks, hoses, diff etc for any leaks and such.

Every bolt on the rear end was showing leak spots. I pointed it out to the service tech who said something along the lines of "when the mechanic has it up he will take a look..." I cut him off by rolling under the truck, in dress slacks and shirt, as he was talking and snapping a pic. I was dressed for the office and just dropping the truck off for the service to be picked up after work. Rolled back out, opened the pic and asked if thought that was "OK" his jaw dropped open and he responded saying they would definitely take care of the issue.

The dealership had to get it authorized/approved from Toyota to do the work under the recall a second time since they had already cleared it. Took them 2 days to get the approval, or decide to eat it themselves, and do the work. They did the drain, open, replace gasket, replace all fasteners, and refill. It has remained oil free since.

    I'm thinking faulty throttle body.

No idea dude but I didn't like that feeling of a dead truck with no response at all from the gas pedal, I'd have
shit a brick if it happened when I got on 95 a moment later. Luckily it was the road before that and a steep hill
so I was able to just coast over to the shoulder and after 5 min. it started right back up and no issue after that.

Heading to the dealer @ 3p today to drop it off and get a loaner. Mat thought it may be a 2.0 issue but I only
had 2.0 on for a day or so, wanted my ECT button back and have been back on 1.05 for the last 2 days. Other than
some residual effect from 2.0 ( is that possible?) I'd guess the CPS or one of the computers.

edit: throttle body huh? I'm hoping they find something when they look it over
I thought w/ limp mode you still had a little power to move it along - I had none.

Hearing about the rear diff leak had me go out and check mine. I had what looks like seepage from 3 spots on mine. 2018 TRD OR 15,500 miles. It didn’t look fresh and looks like it had been there for a bit. Wasn’t wet to the touch but just slightly greasy. Cleaned it off with brake cleaner good and hoping it doesn’t come back.

By the sound of what happened the CPS is the most common culprit. Toyota has stated that when they coat the frames with anti-corrosion coating it can cover the sensor and make it stall out at certain parts of the crank rotation when going from a stop...like stomp on it and it dies.

I would have them replace this part for you first. It’s a $100-$120 part. Pretty sure there is a TSB for it anyways

I was thinking the CPS as soon as it happened but the truck has had zero
issues "like this" and it's nearly 4 yrs. old. So I figured coating on the sensor from
the factory couldn't be the issue - maybe the CPS is just failing?

Did you also see a trans over temp warning flash across your cluster display? IIRC that was also a classic "symptom" of the CPS issue....

Further to this, and according to the documents Toyota produced WRT the CKP recall, SOME timing rotors (reluctor wheel) were manufactured with "excess anti-corrosion coating". This apparently caused issues with the original crank sensor, thus the re-design (much cheaper than separating the engine/transmission on affected trucks and replacing the timing rotor, as this beasty lives inside the bell housing). What's interesting though, is that Toyota wasn't 100% sure of the root cause, as they weren't able to reproduce the same fault definitively during testing. Anyway, as an owner of an early 3rd Gen and not on the recall list, I decided to swap my CKP with the new model anyway. No issues.
