How To: Replacing Carrier Bearing

Arrived today and is Toyota stamped, along Japan origination. 73$

 

I forgot to mention mine came in couple days ago and is 100 percent Toyota OEM original and looks just like J Lee's above.

Just had mine replaced. The original one looked alright for 212k, but needed changed. Shop charged me $135 for the labor. $80 for the Spicer

$97 Timken HB26 Drive Shaft Center Support Bearing

Timken HB26 today. I plan on installing it sunday. Ill give an update after the install

 

Is everybody using the 3/8 drive offset 12 point 14mm and 17mm torque adapters? I'm looking for a source to order online.

 

I just torqued it as tight as I could go with a normal size 14mm wrench. Pretty hard to get much anything else up there and get an accurate reading.

I bought their extended length metric wrench set because of the CB job. Linking 2 wrenches together sucked.

I just did mine, although the old one didn't look that old it had more play than I liked and I was chasing a slight clunk during stops. Looking at the old one it had no stampings to indicate Toyota or any other brand. I got the Spicer from Rockauto ($59) and it came in with Toyota stamped on the rubber. Don't forget to chock your wheels! I chocked mine but as a matter of habit, when you disconnect the shaft the tranny doesn't hold the truck anymore. I would recommend putting the truck in N so you can turn the shaft. The old bearing was Chinese I think, I had a bearing puller but just yanked it off by hand. With an air impact wrench I was able to hold the front shaft with my hand and back the flange bolt off.

 

OP..thx for the writeup. On the same note, have any of you had to shim your carrier after a lift? that was the only way I could get rid of a 35/70mph vibration coming from my driveshaft

 

I also have a vibration around 65-72 but I suspect it's from the previous owner who installed the chinese BC and probably did not mark the previous setup. So I have to figure that out. I plan to setup a cam to see which DS i s vibrating, then work from there.

 

I havent tried that, i changed mine out and still having vibrations however. I think its tires but shim could be the answer

Nothing comes easy. I unstaked the flange nut and the spun it off with an impact wrench. As I was carrying the driveshaft to the bench the flange fell off. Before I painted match marks on the shaft and flange. Pretty sure it’s gone back together out of phase. Best I could do was try to line up the grease fittings front to back.

 

How do you get the 2and gen drive shaft apart? I dont have a flange where the carrier bearing is.

 

Step 1: trade it in for a a 1st Gen.
Problem solved.
