    Well seeing snorkels are mainly for sand it makes sense. But for the most part 1st gen guys do it because it looks cool (to them), it's cheap (under $200) and it's good insurance for the "oh shit" water moment

    Drop bracket lift and booger welds
    It's cheap insurance. I have my intake relocated up at the same height as the ventilation above the hood. My last trip has the trail drive through the edge of a pond in which there was a steep drop off half way through. This sent water over the bottom of my windshield, and I heard the motor gurgle a bit. Sure enough after we got through it, I check my intake and there was water inside the intake but didn't make it past the filter. Since I kept moving it seems the doors took on some water, and some water came through the hole for the steering rag joint but otherwise the cab stayed dry. I figured the relocated intake would be enough for my uses, but the last trip proved that's not the case. But again idk who else are coming across shit like that on the regular, I know I am not, but I want to be prepared if I ever do again.

    less about water crossings and more about grabbing cleaner/cooler air from higher off the ground instead of air from the wheel wells

    Trails here in the southwest during spring/summer are so freakin dusty, you have to space yourself 1/4 mile apart from everyone in your group just to be able to see if you're moving at speed.

    The dust looks as high as the snorkel. I would think it's more important to have a good filter and a better sealed fender to pull air from. The snorkel is in direct contact will all the elements.

    Not that I can tell and I go between SLC at 5k feet and PC at 8K feet pretty regularly

    Yep. My airbox is MUCH cleaner after trips now that I am SCUBA qualified in my taco. Of course, I always offer to lead too! that way I can keep the windows down :D

    It definitely doesn't make it immune to dust but the concentration of it up high is a lot less than the concentration of dirt down by the wheels. Having had mine on about ~ 8 months now I have definitely noticed my air filter stays cleaner than it did before. Not by a ton but it's considerable.

    Now if we're talking about other things like flies, bees, butterflies and shit...you get a lot more of those on your air filter with a snorkel lol.

    Yes, you can't avoid the dust. But its a lot less concentrated up higher. There was a member that posted his air box full of dirt, rocks, and crap. I think its more to do with the crap that gets kicked up by your wheels into your wheel well which is where the stock intake pulls its air :notsure:
    Many do.
