I read the service manual and this thread and planned out a bunch of front end work:

• replacing LCA bushings (
  $101 Whiteline W53377A Front Lower Inner Suspension Control Arm Bushing Kit Compatible with 95-04 Tacoma, 4Runner
  Whiteline W53377A)
• replacing all CV boots with OEM ones
• front differential fluid change
• Replacing headlights with new CAPA-certified replacements
• Ordered new high-wattage headlight bulbs

 

Thats an expensive drawer! lmao looks really good tho from the pic. Staining it would really make it pop.

 

Patches can now pretend to breathe underwater.

 

I don't understand the snorkel concept, if you're in water near the bottom of the snorkel, won't you drown inside the cab?

 

and don't you also need an exhaust out snorkel somewhere?

And what about the water entering the axle breather tubes? Trans has to breathe too, right?

 

Is there a secret snorkel tube inside the cab for you to breathe until you get out from under the water?

Well seeing snorkels are mainly for sand it makes sense. But for the most part 1st gen guys do it because it looks cool (to them), it's cheap (under $200) and it's good insurance for the "oh shit" water moment

It's cheap insurance. I have my intake relocated up at the same height as the ventilation above the hood. My last trip has the trail drive through the edge of a pond in which there was a steep drop off half way through. This sent water over the bottom of my windshield, and I heard the motor gurgle a bit. Sure enough after we got through it, I check my intake and there was water inside the intake but didn't make it past the filter. Since I kept moving it seems the doors took on some water, and some water came through the hole for the steering rag joint but otherwise the cab stayed dry. I figured the relocated intake would be enough for my uses, but the last trip proved that's not the case. But again idk who else are coming across shit like that on the regular, I know I am not, but I want to be prepared if I ever do again.

less about water crossings and more about grabbing cleaner/cooler air from higher off the ground instead of air from the wheel wells

 

do higher elevations have much of an impact with a snorkel?

 

Makes a difference if you are driving behind someone like this: (less dust into your air filter).

 

Trails here in the southwest during spring/summer are so freakin dusty, you have to space yourself 1/4 mile apart from everyone in your group just to be able to see if you're moving at speed.

 

The dust looks as high as the snorkel. I would think it's more important to have a good filter and a better sealed fender to pull air from. The snorkel is in direct contact will all the elements.
