In my build thread, I talk about wanting to eventually move to maxtrac spindles, 17" wheels, blah blah blah. The goal was to do a little at a time as the budget allows.

The other day, I realized my tires were in much worse shape than I thought they were, so I need to get new tires. I'm currently on the stock 16s and can't make the move to 17s yet (wheels I want + tires I want + lift to accommodate new tires/wheels = out of budget).

So, I've got to get new tires and put them on my stock 16s, and probably going with something from the Nitto Grappler family. I'm thinking about getting some Bilstein 5100s for the front at the same time. My question is - if I just do 5100s in the front for now, is the rear going to squat, or will it sit level? I eventually want to get 5100s and either AAL or a new leaf pack for the rear, but if it's not needed right now, I'd rather wait a bit longer for budget reasons.

I do NOT want any ass dragging in the rear. Level, or a slight forward rake are what I want.

    Thank you

The 5100s have 4 settings, stock height, .85, 1.75, and 2.5 (approximately). I'd only get the shocks now if your planning for oversize tires. I liked mine when set to .85 and 1.75 and just replaced the 1st set with 100k miles on them with another set. So in short, it depends on where you set the snap rings as to wether or not you have rake. At the .85 setting it should be close to level assuming everything else is worn oem but if your crazy nose low now shoot for the 1.75 setting.

I have 5100's all around set to 0". They came with the truck when I bought it so don't have much to compare to. They get the job done off road. Seem a little stiff on pavement going over speed bumps and what not, but that may just be me.

The 5100s are adjustable so where you (or your installer) set them, that will determine how much lift you get out of the front, and in turn how much rake you get as a whole. You should be fine. Keep in mind that if you wanted to adjust them installing, it would require a spring compressor and/or removing the shock from the truck.

some would say riding ass maybe a good thing. but yeah id just get set 3rd gen trd take off worth it $200-300. 5100s u gota buy springs/top hat (a tad bit better not worth the price) just get something better fox 2.0 or 6112/5160. u could go cheap use old springs but then it would "ride like ass" some may like that

I think mines smooth as butter with my 885's and E load XLT's. I like the stiffness of them

I'm guessing @Running Man probably doesnt have a 2nd gen and is used to other car/truck stuff. I think you'd get 5 different answers from 5 different people on ride quality. Every 1st gen I've ridden in or driven rattled my teeth out. That being said, I'm glad to see people reaching out to offer @Ren advice on this build.

    The hell guys?

My question was " if I put the 5100s in and move them up a notch or two, am I going to have issues with the rear sagging without an AAL."

My question was not "hey guys! are 5100s any good? Should I get them?"

That's already been decided based on about 6 years of reading this forum.

The 5100 shock is a half assed, and very overhyped shock. My spacer lift and OEM yellow Toyota shocks ride just as bad as a 5100/OME combo

To each their own. I still like mine. Do I want coilovers? Hell yeah, but I’m a broke college student now and I’m happy with them:rofl:

Once I have the money to spend, I’ll hopefully go with some Fox or Icon coilovers w Resi
