Fuel Door Latch

Hey guys, on Monday some dip thong broke my locking fuel door and stole an entire tank of gas from me. The lock works fine and the door isn't bent but the plastic retaining piece snapped so now my fuel door just flops around whenever I turn corners or hit bumps. Does any one know if I can find this part somewhere? I really don't want to spend $70+ on a whole new cylinder key set (

Amazon has them for $52. Might be tough to find just that part. Maybe try a junkyard?

 

I think I am going to have to go this route. What sucks is that the Tacomas are the #1 picked car in the junkyard, so getting any worthwhile parts is a pain.

I found it really cheap using google. Less than $20

I’m considering going to the newer, non-locking style.

 

Since I posted I have found other cheaper options. I still think $20 is somewhat of an overkill for a $2 piece of plastic. I'm thinking that may be a good idea, or at least the hinge so my fuel door doesn't flop around.

 

i do recall seeing a mod for this piece in the past several months, cannot remember off hand
maybe it was @BartMaster1234 that had a fix

Yes. I had a new one 3D printed with 100% infill and ABS plastic, I secured it with two part epoxy. Total cost was $15 after I had someone on Reddit print it for me

Unfortunately it's just a Tacoma part.

Perfectly fine. It’s 10x stronger than the OEM one since it uses half inch solid plastic instead of the thin stuff Toyota used.

Now you can print more, sell ‘em, and recoup your cost!

 

Place a 1/2"dia.x 1/8" thick neodymium magnet on the upper right-hand screw head holding the plastic around the fuel filler. Close the door and the magnet will transfer to the fuel door in the proper position. To open stick the key in and pull. Works perfectly. I got the magnets on Amazon, but they are available in many places.

 

Make one out of aluminum and put something around the edge to keep it from scratching. It’s just a catch

 

I was thinking actually going different route. One of the most common ways of stealing cars was break out the fuel door (with the lock), then make a key for it. The same key usually opens the door and turns the ignition. So if your fuel door is stolen expect to have the car be stolen next day or so.

On the other hand open fuel door without locking fuel cap is just asking for the cap and/or fuel to be stolen. The best solution is actually what is quite common in modern cars: fuel door open by the lever in the cabin or trunk. I still did not figure out how to do it in 1st gen Tacoma.

 

I have never heard of this. It seems like way too much work for someone who would rather punch out a window and ignition and be on their way

I have two 90s Lexus cars (SC400 & LS400) that have an electronic fuel door lock with a switch inside to open the fuel door. Maybe would be a good donor for a retrofit to the Tacoma?

 

This was common was to steal a car for resale. Busting window and ignition is just bad for business.
