What is the likely MPG loss going with 33s?

    I just checked mine for the first time since making the switch from 265/65/17 to 285/65/18 and I lost 1.5 MPG. This is all interstate, cruise set at 72 mph. Also, my 18s are load range E so they are considerably heavier than the factory size I was running. I don't really care though. It will cost me about $30 a month more in gas (@ $3.25 per gal) and I can live with that.

    Doesn't really concern me. If I was really worried about the cost of gas I would have kept my Civic Si that I sold to buy my Tacoma.

    5100 @ 1.75, tsb rear springs with 5100. anytime fogs, rear diff breather, 50 cal ammo boxes on bed rails
    Do you guys take into account the tire size difference when you calculate your mpg? once you change tire size its no longer a simple miles driven / gallons used. you have to multiply the circumfrence difference of the stock tire to new tire. If you arent doing that it will definately make your gas milage be skewed.

    Yes, I figure in 6.6% error when I calculate my mileage now. Multiply my distance by 1.066 to get corrected distance traveled.

    I'm pretty heavy footed and am averging about 14.5 mpg with nitto trail grapplers 265x70r17's vs the maybe low 16s with 265x70r17's and I get about 250 on a tank with the corrected distance. It sucks but I didn't do it for mpg, I wanted the off road traction and capabilities they had so as was mentioned above, gotta pay to play ha ha:mudding:

    Expect to lose 3-4MPG. Unless all highway wide open no traffic. I was in the same boat and I took the dive to get 33” and a lift and I paying now. Yes buy a civic blah blah blah. Ppl here don’t realize that when ppl ask questions they want honest answers not smart ass shoulda coulda woulda responds. And I’m driving like a grandma to squeeze mpgs as possible. Around town stop and go hovers around 12 freeway around 20.     The thread is 9 years old, let it die.

    But since we're here. I went from 38 lb P rated 265/70/16's to 53 lb E rated 265/75/16's and my fuel mileage is exactly the same. Yea, that's only a 32" tire, but another inch isn't going to make much difference.

    It ain't the tire height nor weight. It is the tire width, tread pattern and air inflation along and other modifications that add weight to the vehicle as well as the lift that changes aerodynamics that hurt fuel mileage.

    If you're not accounting for the fact that you're odometer is now off by about 6-7% you should. With that factored in you're actually getting about 17.5 mpg instead of 16.5. The other 1.5 mpg loss is due to the lift, wider tires and poor rolling resistance of the more aggressive tires. I'd bet money that if you'd gone with a skinny 33" tire with an AT tread and passed on the lift you'd have not seen a loss of fuel mileage at all.

    Love it! I was wondering on the math. I was trying to figure out the difference because I knew the wider AT tires would contribute as well as the lift and removing airdam etc. So fair to say 2.5 loss? I’ll tell ya what I’ll save money on speeding tickets staying in slow lane on the way to work

    Ya I have 285/70/17 now
