That's how we roll. We tack weld several tubes together then cut them.

Question for the Pros, so no one here LOL
ok seriously, I'm gonna be welding these two pieces together (actually 3 pieces). The "coupler" fits as good as it can inside the longer pieces.

    20190814_173837.jpg

The questions is, should I weld each side first then do a whole side to side pass OR should I just do one side to side pass all:fistbump: at once?? I will be doing MIG, .025 wire 75/25 gas.

Whenever I sleeve and weld stuff I tack it on top and bottom so it lays flat on the table and weld one side then flip and weld the other. If im concerned about it warping I clamp it and weld and let it cool then flip and repeat

Once and done. The pic with the 1/8" gap is the way to go.

70S wire is going to be waaay stronger than the base metal.

Interesting. I have to do 8 of those. Never done it before. I like the idea of one pass. Were talking like 12ga not even 1/8 thickness. I'm gonna do some testing tomorrow.

It just got my attention because I could not even clear security in so many places being dressed as you were.

    A thing or two...
How do you figure that you don't have to use the fall protection? It's OSHA mandated when working more than 4 ft off the ground. If we're being generous and saying that you work in the construction industry, it's 6 ft off the ground. You're on top of triple stacked shipping containers which is 24 ft minimum.

Maybe your employer wouldn't ding you for not using it. However, if you didn't use it and OSHA got involved after an incident, they'd be fucked. Don't get me wrong, though, I hate senseless OSHA regs as much as the next guy. Just looking out.

Hahaha I work in a shirt and shorts every day. You can where whatever the hell you want.

Naw you’re totally 100% correct. It is absolutely OSHA mandated. I meant none of my direct supervisors give a crap and there typically isn’t anyone around watching to give you any flack for it. On these containers I was using a book lift on the front side for most of the task where I had my harness on in the basket and was welding from the front side. Then I had to hit everything from the backside for this run of containers because all the carpenters were building a set right below and I didn’t wanna be boomed out over them. We threw a fall protection line up there and threw on harnesses since falling 24 feet into the dirt while leaning over the front side of the container welding stuff didn’t sound like a fun day

They are 4ft pieces, need to make a 12ft post with them. They'll be on concrete (about 3 ft deep) linked to each other by a steel cable.

Question for you guys. Welding isnt my profession, I work in IT so I'm staring at computer screens 10 hours a day. I wear uv resistant glasses to try and help with eye strain but they only help a little. When ever I go to weld I have a really hard time focusing on my welds. Is there anything you guys do to help with this? I wear contacts already, maybe a cheap set of glasses on top of that or something?

I went to the optometrist and they said it's just eye strain and to rest my eyes. Not sure how that's possible lol

Yep. I got astigmatism. I can find no bifocals that will let me see the weld puddle clearly. I just remove the prescription lenses and use non prescription safety glasses. Everything beyond 15" is blurry. But I can see the weld very good.

Another hint is good lighting. I like to have a Big Larry flashlight shining right where I'm welding.

maybe try some reading glasses with your contacts... Last year the eye doc said I would probably at some point need bi-focals. Sometimes even with my glasses small font is hard to read.

Need to weld some galvanized pipe for a chain link gate. What process is best for that?

    Aside from wearing a respirator?

Is it a vision problem or you just have trouble concentrating on the welding??

I am so used to wearing ear plugs without them it looks like my first day of welding like a six year old.
