Threads like this will keep me in used, 2nd Gen Tacomas for the rest of my life.

Good Luck OP and the rest of you dealing with this issue on your new trucks.

As for the front vs rear source of the sound, what are they basing this opinion on?

Anyone from a dealer or having the service manual know tests should be expected?

^chassis ears are legit. Pretty sure no ones actually placed those on mine. The engineer confirmed my noise, said he could throw a rear end at it but didn’t think it would help. Should’ve had ‘em do it to up my lemon count. Did check and mine had the TSB stuff put in on the factory floor. Wonder how loud it would be without!

Lol, mine made it to about 10-11k miles then I started noticing a noise with the rear slider window open. Now I hear it any time Im above 40ish mph. Good luck, but this appears to be very common and does occur after time and not always from the beginning of the trucks life.

Front vs rear test should be easy, lift the truck off the ground, put it in gear and accelerate. Wont even need chassis ears, without the front being on the ground and rolling it wont move. You'd be able to identify the source being the rear in about 1 minute.

this may work for driveline vibrations, and rotational noises, but for a gearset, a load must be placed on it.. you would need to apply the e-brake slightly..

Good to know, I've seen it done, so they must have used the brake.

be sure that it doesnt do a 1 wheel peel, or you'll just be hearing the spider gears (they can be noisy at higher speeds)...

There are a ton of threads on this. It's just a resonance issue, and there is no problem at all. The 3rd gen tacomas are pretty whiny, and there wasn't enough dampening put on to deal with the resonance noise. If you look at the TSB it's also just a bandaid to help dampen the noise. There have been various results of people doing the TSB. Some claim it went away, many claim it reduced it a little, and many others say no difference. I've been to the dealer, they contacted Toyota and Toyota played the "it's normal card."

My recommendation, take it to the dealer and at least document it. It's up to you how much grey hair you want to take on to pursue the issue. My fix- install a roof rack, intake, exhaust and 33's. You wont hear no noise at all. ;)

You do realize that there was TSB for this issue for each and every year of the second gen?

Here's the TSB that covered the 2005-2013 model years - issued in April of 2013.

No, I did not. Thankfully I haven’t had the issue in my ‘15. I drove my ‘07 to 351,000 miles and it didn’t have it either.

    I appreciate the info:thumbsup:

Dealer working on my 18, so we drove two brand new ones and both have it. Bottom line is they all have it, some people have no idea what it is but will argue.

NVH they /should have/ designed out of it, and that their fix curiously doesn’t solve either
