Hey guys, haven't encountered this but my 98 4wd 5mt was having issues going up a modest grade. I had it in 4th (probably a gear too high for this grade/speed) and all of a sudden the revs would jump and I think the speedo would too, but I was going the same speed/possibly losing speed. It's pretty hot out, but the engine temp was fine. Think it's just time to change the fluid?

Sounds like your clutch is going bad or your tires slipped. It's hard to tell from your description. I don't know what fluids you're thinking of replacing but that won't change anything with RPM/speed.

Well I was thinking I needed to change the transmission fluid. Supposedly the clutch is less than 10k old. No tire slip.

Although I did just kill a driveshaft so maybe it damaged the clutch while going out?

Transmission fluid won't cause slipping like you defined. It will cause grinding and making it hard to shift. What do you mean by you killed the drive shaft? "Killing" a driveshaft should have no affect on the clutch because it would have to go through the transmission to even touch it.

The splines on my driveshaft stripped making rwd impossible. Not sure how that breaking process could have effected other components.

I'm at 223k. The previous owner had said it was just replaced before I bought it but I guess he was full of it... :frusty:

Damn. Any "while it's out" things I should do? Or rather my mechanic? I wish I had time to get my hands dirty, but with the road trip coming up I just need it done.

    Do
1)rear main seal to engine. OEM
    2) inputshaft seal on the front and rear of the transmission. OEM
    3) input shaft seal on transfer case. OEM
    4) may as well do the stick shift bushing and ball OEM
    5) redline transmission fluid.
    6) clean and check the pressure relief valve, sometimes it’s easier to buy a new one at 10.00 OEM
    7) pilot bushing OEM in the back of the engine.

I can’t stress enough to make sure you buy all these parts “OEM”

If you have not noticed the sweet smell of burning clutch lining I gotta wonder .

Just how did you strip the splines on the transfer case out put shaft ??

If he's cracking apart the transfer case/ transmission, shouldn't he do the rear tranny seal?

I've gone from Redline M90 to Amsoil MTF. Seems to help out better on those first few grumpy shifts first thing in the morning..

I wish I knew. I parked in my driveway (nothing out of the ordinary) and when I put it in reverse it sounded like death, so I tried first and 2nd before pulling over and parking. Zero power down in rwd, but I managed to get it back in the driveway using 4wd. Then I got that replaced about a month ago.

Also no clutch smell. I'm familiar with that smell from my last manual car. And I can still pull up a very steep hill in first on my way to work without slipping. I only noticed it in 4th on this moderate grade at low rpm when it was 90f+ out.

Is there an easy way to confirm it's the clutch without getting inside it?

Sadly not on these trucks .

Once things cooled down your clutch worked fine ??

That was the only time I've noticed it. Drove up a very steep hill yesterday in first with no slipping. Honestly the clutch feels like it has lots of bite, I think I just should have been in 3rd the whole way. After it slipped I downshifted and the problem went away. That's why I was curious about a tranny oil change.

Manual trans "fluid" or gear oil as it's correctly refered to. Will not cause a transmission to slip internally . Your transmission is full of mechanical gears. If one of them "slips" Then it's broken and your not going anywhere with a lot of grinding noise. Put a clutch in it.

I'm not familiar with the parts, but is it possible the clutch isn't adjusted somehow, or are there no adjustments on these?

And I have to ask, how long have you driven a stick shift car? Maybe you're riding the clutch and wearing it out prematurely.

It should not slip in any gear on any hill if it's working correctly.

Been driving stick since I was 15, so 11 years haha. This truck is new to me though. Only a few thousand miles of ownership. The previous owner said it(the clutch) was replaced along with the seals, belts and spark plugs/wires. I took him at his word since I could see the new belts and wires, but it does leak oil so who knows...

Easy to say the clutch was done as a selling point really hard to check !!

So as a belated update, I put off replacing the clutch because it was difficult for the mechanic (and myself) to recreate the issue so we decided not to go through with it unless it persisted. Today it was much worse after I loaded my camper and drove a couple hundred miles. Particularly going up any hill under 2500rpms.

Took it to a shop and they dropped the transmission and said the clutch looked fine to them, and recently replaced. Any idea what else could cause a clutch slip symptom? They are replacing it and the flywheel as well as the seals mentioned by 1997tacomav6. Just curious if anyone else has insight on it. The mechanic said it's possible the clutch is still the issue but just not one that's super visible to them.
