the guys at 4WD Action are at it again.

this explains a lot to a curb crawler such as myself. seems easy enough to install a front diff auto locker.

    anyone have experience?

A buddy of mine has a front set of Weathertech mats for a 2014/15. I thought they might fit my 09, but they don't. They were in a '14 Tacoma RWD (not sure if that was the difference). Anyone with a 14/15 interested in them? They're Black and he'd like 50 obo.
Send me a PM and I'll hook you up. I'll try to grab a pic...

Well doesn't show 2nd or 3rd gen Tacoma's specifically. Do we share parts with the Hilux platform?

The Hilux sounded like a diesel - would it share the same fr diff components in that case?

I have had my eye on auto lockers for a bit now, my friends jeep has them both front and rear. They work amazing.

Maybe another year before I go for it.

I’ve been looking at them for awhile for my jeep. Same application though, front diff

Only issue with it is, tacoma/jeep front diff are weak. So possible break and it wont be the locker that breaks, CV axle or the gear will go probably

Then you almost loose 4wd for winter driving as well, once in 4x4 your sending power to the front drive wheels which then causes them to lock up together and you’ll get understeer and the vehicle will pull you around more and be less controllable in winter climates

And in 4lo offroading the diff is locked to your steering wheels so you’ll loose a lot of turning radius as the tires will fight as you turn

And im not sure exactly how your driveline works anymore, but it wont be a open diff anymore so one cv will always be working with the driveshaft so you will lose mpgs

They're also not that useful for rocks as you need to spin to get them to lock.

And just think of the grenade diff of gm when they use the Detroit auto locker.

Seems it's only good for stuff with a little speed. And like you said winter will be shit.

Selectable is better option and really not that much more money when you consider the shipping from Australia for this etc.

Lol i was actually just thinking about doing a lunchbox cause im thinking lockers right now. But i think ill go selectable because i had someone tell me auto lockers are sketchy as shit in the winter

The price point and easy install of them sure are tempting though

I don't know how they would perform. From the video he shows how the teeth come together and separate. Looks very fragile to me. I feel those teeth would grind down a lot in a hurry with the constant moving between the two states. I think having it on or off is a safer bet, but what do I know, I'm a cunt.
