Hey there and welcome to TW.

As for the Saiga, I have had some experience with it and I was very disappointed with it's reliability and the kick it had. keeping rounds on target after the intial shot was very difficult and i'm an experienced shooter. Then while I was shooting the second mag, the gun kept jamming and from what the owner tells me this is a common issue. So for a home defense gun, I don't think I would chose it. However, it does look really cool and I plan on owning one some day just to have it :)

I have heard mostly great things about the Saiga 12 and have never had any issues. Recoil is a bit much, but a better butt pad & recoil buffer almost cuts it in half, unless you have an 8 inch barrel. Its definitely tacti-cool.

As far as home defense I stick with my Kimber .45 & 4 battery mag lite. My old man prefers his Norinco M-97 Trench gun for HD. It runs about $300-$400. Just hold the trigger down & you get a blast with every pump. The armory at Ft Benning built it for him, so I don't know if they added any 'extras'. 1 or 2 flechette rounds to the chest has stopped the bad guys on more than 1 occasion.

The old man uses the green flechette shells. The flechettes are about 1 1/2 inches long. He said they will defeat basic body armor and if you at the right distance they pin you to the wall. It makes for a pretty nasty aftermath.

The Dragon's Breath & Macho Gaucho shells are crowd pleasers:

12 GA. "Dragon's Breath" (or Flame Thrower)
The 12 Ga. "Flame Thrower" round produces an enormous wall of fire for 50 + feet. The incendiary metal compound contained inside burns when fired at over 4000 degrees fahrenheit, showering your target in a momentary wall of flame. WARNING! Extreme fire hazard. Do not shoot in any dry grass foliage, trees, or near flammable materials. Don't shoot indoors. Use extreme caution. (This 1 is super cool, it basically fires a flaming comet from your gun)

    12 GA. "Macho Gaucho"
The device made famous by the Argentine cowboy is called the "bolo". This device consisted of two heavy balls connected by a string and was thrown at and wrapped around an animals legs causing it to trip. Now this idea has been adapted for the 21st century in the form of a 12 gauge shotgun round. This round consists of two lead slugs connected by a steel wire that whirls and twirls during flight devastating your target. (great for crowd control especially if fired at neck level)

The Rhodesian Jungle, Pit Bull, & Terminator shells are pretty awsome too. You can find them all at www.firequest.com

I used both mossberg and Rem 870 when I was a cop. 870 is sweet but mossberg is a super value. Both have tons of available accessories. Accuracy in 870 is superior by far tho.

Pirates in the old days did a similar thing with canons. They would pack two cannon balls connected by a chain into the barrel and shoot at the masts of other ships. (saw it on the deadlist warrior)

Having shot both side by side I find that hard to believe.

I prefer the Mossberg 500, and have one. Most firearms instructors do not like the Mossberg because the location of the safety. Although no one could confirm, the claim is that if it is dropped you could have an accidental discharge. I am no gun expert, just my opinion.

Well, thats my opinion and I'm sticking to it. I have shot the hell outta both brands and always felt the 870 was more accurate. That being said. Its a SHOTGUN, not really designed for overall accuracy. More of a HOLY SHIT...did you see that thing, kinda gun.

    I've lost count....
    x2

Every Mossberg shotgun I have ever shot has shown consistent/reliable accuracy with any brand/size of shell put through it. I can't say the same about the Remington shotguns I have shot. Don't get me wrong, when you find the right load for a Remington they can be very accurate...they just tend to be VERY finicky about the shells they like to eat.

I like (and own) both Mossberg and Remington.....however all the Remingtons I own are centerfire rifles.

Well this one one be picky about what it eats, it can handle 2 3/4", 3" and 3 1/2" shells. I don't think I'll have any issues.

Bear in mind, using flechette rounds for personal protection will buy your attorney college eduations for multiple kids. I believe they were even banned in the Geneva Conventions.
I used to use my dad's 870 Wingmaster (@1950 vintage)for pheasant in Nebraska. Never hit a damned thing. Used a Walgreens Mossy 500 (back when you could get shotguns at a drug store...) in California rice fields, and never failed to limit out at least myself and one other person.

To put that in perspective, I hit 23-24 out of 25 birds in trap shooting with the cheap-ass Mossberg.

If you're using it strickly for home defense purposes/plinking accuracy won't be a huge factor. Any shotgun should be reliable/accurate within 15-20 yards.

I mostly use my shotguns for hunting and need the gun to be accurate out to 50-60 yards. My Mossberg 535 shotgun also takes any 2 3/4", 3", or 3 1/2" shell. I feed it a steady diet of 3 1/2" hevi-shot #5's through a Briley Extra-Full choke tube and it serves me well in the woods.

Just have fun with that gun and don't make it a "safe queen". The best/most fun shotgun is the one you shoot on a regular basis :D

I was with you up until that last sentence.

You can have your opinion, I'm not attacking you. You may indeed have shot better with the 870 but I'm telling you that all things being equal (barrel length, type of shot, sabot or slug), there is no perceivable difference in accuracy between the two let alone one being superior to the other in that respect.;)

Guess I could have added to my earlier post,,, Dad's Wingmaster is a much better built and smoother gun that the Mossberg. The only reason I hit better with the Mossy is that it fit me- shouldered instantly and perfectly every time.

i had a mossberg 500 with the top folding stock w/ shell holder and i HATED it. the factory pistol grib was better and the top folding stock blocked the safety. i sold it cause it just sat collecting dust and now i regret it. i will probably get another eventually and not put the stock on it.
