What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Nice. Id suggest trying to fit it on the cab side for 2 reasons.

1) weight, insead of being behind the axle it'll be in front which will help the handling. Might seem silly, but pays off. Think that tank is like 10-12 gal right? Thats 40-60lbs of water.

2) bed access. That thing won't move and it'll be in the way to get to all the things you want to unpack every time. If it doesn't need to come out every night, put it by the cab. This is a good simple rule to live by I've found as it will make packing and unpacking the truck way way easier, faster, and more efficient.

Water weighs 8.3 lbs per gallon, more like 83-103 lbs on that tank if it's 10-12 gallons and full.

I always appreciate a TW members feedback (unless you're a 3rd gen owner) lol.

My reasoning for placing it there is because;

My Powertank is mounted on the left. My 5 gallon fuel jug sits on the right, and bungee corded to the non-rusted, factory installed, all in one piece rope hook.

In the center I place a larger ice chest, which I can access from reaching over the bed if needed.

Immediately after those items is a canopy (which folds up square/blocky), 2 folding chairs, a folding table, and a plastic bin full of camping essentials.

The front half of the bed is taken up already, but the way I have things laid out, I have access to the items I need to get out and set up in the order I need.

Ideally the water jug should be up close to the cab, but then I'll need a much longer water line to reach my portable, electrically driven sink.

Open to thoughts...

Since it's pretty slow at work right now I'm doing some research on replacing my clutch. So far I'm getting the Aisin Clutch kit, Luk Flywheel and MC shifter bushing.



Is there anything else I should need or replace while I'm in there? First time doing a clutch but it doesn't seem too hard

 

According to the description of the kit yup. I've read that people have pieced their own kit and gotten Timken bearings. The kit doesn't tell me which brand they are tho

Most 'kits' come with the bearings, just make sure they're decent ones and not some cheap chinese bearings that are going to crap out on you...don't want to have to take it apart again anytime soon after you get it all buttoned up.

 

I find packing one of the most unrated things people do on their rigs. It never stops devoloping ever either and I know from my own experiance having stuff packed right makes it way better. I get reminded of it all the time when i camp with other people and how fast I can pack up my rig vs others.



Anyways.

Id swat the cooler and put the tank there. The reason for that is of course the cooler is a high access thing. You'll want it for lunch on the trail and dinner of course. Having it more towards the rear is best I find. Running hose for the tank is easy and cheap. Im not sure what you mean by sink..but id think just a curled hose with a pump if needed will suffice for most all needs.

 

I think you meant underrated? Lol I pack up quickly but set up quickly as well; love it.

I'll get the water jug against the cab a try as next month I may do some dispersed camping.

With that being said, I'll probably dedicate the big ice chest for condiments, and food to be cooked. It already serves said purpose, but I also toss in "extra drinks" that may not fit in the smaller ice chest inside the truck. When I set up base camp though, the ice chest always gets removed and put in the shade.

What I mean by sink, I have one with a built in motor and battery. Has a port to connect a hose to for a water supply, and the unit itself has a fold down/swiveling faucet. Also has another port for outbound water; quickly and easily connect a hose with swivel and nozzle/sprayer of your choice.

 

Yeah it doesn't tell me what they are. So I may piece my kit together and just get Timken bearings

Not sure if I'm going to go to my buddies place or do it at mine but he has a transmission jack or else I'd go spend the $100 on it as I've heard it saves a bunch of headaches. I heard about the bolts and thankfully I have a V6 but I'll watch that video as well

Edit: so you just reused the pressure plate? (I'm assuming that's what you meant by shutter bushing)

Like I said. Packing the rig always changes and always can be better. Its an interesting puzzle.

The OEM one falls apart over time and makes it difficult to shift.

I have it sitting in my desk at home, don't quite need to change it out yet I don't think but one of these days I'll get around to it.

 

So here's the thing; I bought the Tacoma JUST for camping/outings lol

I regularly used to backpack, and I've got my weekend packs down to about 11-12lbs before food and water. I pack ultralight, and I'm a minimalist .

6 months ago I decided I don't always want to "hike" to my destination and rather, drive, park, and camp; hence I bought the Tacoma.

I just bought the sink last week and the water jug yesterday.

As for the 2 ice chests, the one in the truck is tiny really.
